„Heute geweiht und gesalbt, wahre und schütze das Reich, indem du genau jenen Pfad annimmst, den deine Großväter und Urgroßväter gegangen sind.“
(They said) Consecrated today, rule the kingdom by adopting the same path followed by your grandfathers and greatgrandfathers.
A ruler’s legitimacy is expressed through protecting the realm by walking the proven dharmic path of the ancestors—tradition as a safeguard against arbitrariness.
For householders/leaders: align decisions with dharmic precedents and protect dependents; cultivate humility before lineage wisdom.
Dharma as sustaining order (ṛta/dharma) through adherence to time-tested conduct; the ruler as instrument of cosmic-social harmony.
Bṛhadāraṇyaka/Chāndogya ethos of lineage-based instruction; also Taittirīya’s injunction to follow good conduct (ācāra) and the path of the good.
Mahābhārata Śānti Parva (rājadharma: protect by following ancestral dharma); Rāmacaritamānasa Ayodhyākāṇḍa (ideal kingship framed as following maryādā)
Vedic idea of ṛta upheld by the king; Dharmaśāstra on rājan’s duty of protection
Ayodhyākāṇḍa: repeated emphasis on Ikṣvāku lineage conduct and protection of subjects
