Inside Sukta 154

How it unfolds

  1. Where it opens

The poet announces he will declare Viṣṇu’s vīrya—his mighty deeds in measuring the realms and stabilizing the highest station.

  2. Development

The hymn unfolds Viṣṇu’s cosmic action through the motif of the three strides: establishing the threefold order and bearing all worlds as a single sustaining power.

  3. Climax

The vision of the three steps ‘filled with honey’ and the shining disclosure of the paramaṃ padam—Viṣṇu’s supreme step—radiant and inexhaustible.

  4. Where it settles

The worshipper’s longing turns devotional and aspirational: to reach those luminous dwelling-places where the ‘cows’ (rays/insights) roam unwearied, resting in the highest light.

The deity: Viṣṇu

  • In the VedaIn the Rig Veda, Viṣṇu is the wide-strider (urugāya/urukrama) who traverses and measures the worlds, establishing their stations and making space for life and sacrifice. His three steps are described as filled with sweetness (madhu) and as the highest, shining realm that seers seek.
  • Cosmic functionTo order and expand cosmic space, establish the threefold world, and reveal the highest luminous station (the “supreme step”) that supports and orients all realms.
  • Inner significanceThe power of consciousness to ‘take the three strides’—from ordinary perception to widening vision and finally to the supreme standpoint of clarity; the ascent from limited mind to the highest light and truth.

The seer

  • Dīrghatamas ĀucathyaĀucathya (descendant of Ucathya; often linked with the Aṅgiras/Bhṛgu-Āṅgirasa seer line in later tradition) · A famed ṛṣi of profound, symbolic vision and “long darkness/long sight,” associated with enigmatic cosmological imagery and the inner meaning of Vedic speech (vāc).
