Inside Sukta 47

How it unfolds

  1. Where it opens

The hymn opens with a bold intimacy: the worshippers "grasp" Indra’s right hand, claiming him as their allied patron of treasures and guardian of the cows/rays.

  2. Development

Requests broaden into a catalogue of Indra’s gifts—vāja with horses, chariots, heroes, and multiplied abundance—framed as wealth that follows auspicious order and supports inspired seers.

  3. Climax

The peak petition asks for a vast, unmatched dwelling/foundation (bṛhantam kṣayam asamam), ratified by Heaven and Earth as witnesses to the boon.

  4. Where it settles

The hymn resolves by returning to the central refrain-like request: may Indra grant the radiant, potent, many-formed rayi—prosperity that is enduring, victorious, and luminous.

The deity: Indra

  • In the VedaIndra is celebrated as the heroic lord of power and abundance (vasupati), the protector and winner of the cows (go-pati), and the giver of vāja (victorious force) and rayi (wealth). He is invoked as a strong ally whose right hand can be clasped, implying covenant, protection, and assured generosity.
  • Cosmic functionHe upholds the expansion of life-force and victory over obstruction, releasing and safeguarding the life-giving herds (cows as wealth and as luminous energies), and establishing secure dwelling and increase for the people.
  • Inner significanceIndra signifies the awakened will and courageous divine energy in the seeker—breaking inner resistance, securing clarity (rays/cows), and granting a stable inner "home" (kṣaya) where strength, insight, and abundance can grow.

  • Invite Indra with praise of his guardianship of cows/rays and his lordship over treasures (vasu).
  • Recite the hymn with emphasis on the repeated boon-formula "asmabhyaṃ citraṃ vṛṣaṇaṃ rayiṃ dāḥ" as the principal request.
  • Make offerings while naming desired supports: horses, chariots, heroes, and a stable dwelling (kṣaya).
  • Conclude by affirming the blessing through cosmic witnesses (Dyāvāpṛthivī) and by sealing the request for enduring increase.

Offerings

  • Soma (where applicable in Śrauta context)

Frequently Asked Questions

It repeatedly asks Indra to give "citra vṛṣaṇa rayi"—a radiant, many-formed, powerful wealth—along with vāja (victorious strength), prosperity, and a secure dwelling (kṣaya).

It is a poetic sign of alliance and trust: the worshippers claim Indra as their close protector and patron, confident that he will lead and support them in gaining wealth and victory.

They can be literal wealth (cattle) and also symbolic “rays” of light and insight; calling Indra "gopati" presents him as the protector and winner of both prosperity and luminous powers.
