Inside Sukta 141

How it unfolds

  1. Where it opens

A direct address to Agni: ‘speak toward us’ and become well-disposed, granting wealth and forward movement.

  2. Development

The hymn broadens into a many-deity invocation—Soma, Agni, Ādityas, Viṣṇu, Sūrya, and priestly power—creating a protective and truth-bearing divine circle around the rite.

  3. Climax

Indra–Vāyu with Bṛhaspati are invoked ‘here’ as easy to call, with the explicit social prayer that all people in the gathering become unanimous and benevolent-minded.

  4. Where it settles

The focus returns to the practical outcome: divine favor expressed as protection, prosperity, and a successfully aligned community capable of completing the sacred work together.

The deity: Indra–Vāyu and Bṛhaspati

  • In the VedaIndra and Vāyu are frequently paired as swift, Soma-loving powers who arrive first to the pressing; Bṛhaspati is the lord of sacred speech (brahman), the priestly power who breaks obstacles and establishes right order through mantra. Together they are invoked as “su-havā” (easy to call), bringing strength, breath-like impetus, and inspired counsel.
  • Cosmic functionIndra embodies victorious force that clears impediments; Vāyu governs movement, life-breath, and the quick conveyance of offerings; Bṛhaspati upholds ṛta through the ordering power of prayer and insight, opening the way for prosperity and right decision in the community.
  • Inner significanceIndra–Vāyu signify coordinated power and prāṇa-driven will (energy + direction), while Bṛhaspati signifies illumined intelligence and truthful speech that unifies a group. The hymn frames spiritual success as both inner alignment (clear mind and inspired word) and outer harmony (consenting will in the assembly).
