Devata

Dialogic hymn (Yama–Yamī tradition); powers implied include Agni (as Pituḥ Napāt) and cosmic order

Inside Sukta 10

How it unfolds

  1. Where it opens

A travel-and-kindling image frames the moral stage: the ‘knower’ establishes Pituḥ Napāt (Agni) as the forward-leading light on earth, implying witness and order.

  2. Development

Yamī presses for union, arguing from necessity and continuity, while Yama counters with the demands of ṛta and the presence of divine ‘watchers’ who never sleep—conscience and cosmic law.

  3. Climax

The warning about the devānāṃ spaśaḥ crystallizes the hymn’s ethical force: nothing escapes ṛta, so transgression cannot be normalized even under the guise of primordial necessity.

  4. Where it settles

Yama redirects Yamī to a different, auspicious partner and urges a ‘subhadrā saṃvid’—a harmonious understanding grounded in lawful relationship and social good.

The deity: Yama–Yamī, with implied Agni and Varuṇa-like surveillance

  • In the VedaYama appears as the voice of law and boundary, attentive to the ever-moving ‘watchers of the gods’ (devānāṃ spaśaḥ) and to what can be done without violating ṛta. Yamī represents the compelling force of desire and continuity, pressing for a first union; Agni as ‘Pituḥ Napāt’ is evoked as the forward-leading light placed on earth, a witness and mediator of right order.
  • Cosmic functionTo articulate and safeguard ṛta by distinguishing lawful generativity from disorder, thereby stabilizing kinship norms, social ethics, and the cosmic rhythm mirrored in human conduct.
  • Inner significanceA psychological teaching on integrating eros and will: desire is acknowledged but redirected into auspicious, socially coherent relationship; vigilance (the ‘watchers’) symbolizes conscience and the inescapability of moral causality.

The seer

  • Yama (dialogue voice; traditional attribution)As the archetypal upholder of ṛta and later lord of the departed, Yama embodies lawful restraint and the moral boundary that separates impulse from sanctioned order; here he functions as teacher through dialogue.

  • Ācamana and saṅkalpa: intention to align speech and mind with ṛta
  • Kindling/acknowledging Agni (as witness): brief invocation or silent attention to the household fire
  • Recite the sukta in full, preserving the dialogic voices (Yamī’s urging, Yama’s restraint)
  • Pause after key turns (e.g., the ‘watchers’ verse) for contemplation on accountability and right conduct
  • Conclude with a śānti-style resolve: redirect desire toward auspicious concord (saṃvid) and social harmony

  • Sesame or simple oblation (optional, domestic setting)

Frequently Asked Questions

It is a dialogue where Yamī urges Yama to unite with her, and Yama refuses because it would break ṛta (right order). The hymn teaches that desire must be guided by law and harmony.

They are the devānāṃ spaśaḥ—figures of divine surveillance. In meaning, they represent conscience and the idea that actions are seen and carry moral consequences.

Because Yama’s solution is not repression but redirection: desire should find an auspicious, lawful form. The closing emphasizes “subhadrā saṃvid”—a fortunate, harmonious agreement aligned with ṛta.
