Inside Sukta 128

How it unfolds

  1. Where it opens

Agni is ‘born for man’ as the firm-supporting Hotṛ, perfectly aligned with sacred law and seated in the ritual place (Iḷā’s seat).

  2. Development

His universal obedience and companionship are praised; he is to be made renowned like wealth, and his powers are described as will-directed and expansive, bringing riches and increase.

  3. Climax

Agni’s protective potency is invoked—he saves from external assaults: crooked harm, hostile speech, and striking sin.

  4. Where it settles

The hymn ends with a collective enthronement and adoration of Agni as beloved, most discerning messenger and all-knowing kavi, whom even the gods call through songs for aid and abundance.

The deity: Agni

  • In the VedaAgni is the yajiṣṭha Hotṛ—most fit to sacrifice—unbetrayable, seated in the ritual order, and praised as havyavāha (carrier of oblations), arati (swift messenger), and kavi (seer-poet). He is portrayed as viśvavedas (all-knowing) and viśvāyu (all-life), a friendly companion whose fame is to be spread like abundant wealth.
  • Cosmic functionMediator between the human and divine realms: he conveys offerings to the gods, awakens and sustains the sacrificial order (ṛta), and safeguards prosperity and right speech within the community.
  • Inner significanceThe awakened flame of discernment and aspiration: the inner priest that organizes intention, purifies impulses, and turns human effort into a luminous offering—protecting the mind from distortion, fear, and hostile influences.

The seer

  • Kutsa ĀṅgirasaĀṅgirasa (Angiras family tradition; associated with the Kutsa–Indra hymn-cycle in Mandala 1) · A prominent early Rigvedic seer linked with the Āṅgirasa current of fire-priests and with hymns that celebrate the right-ordered power of sacrifice; his name is especially remembered in connection with Indra’s aid to Kutsa and the victorious, wealth-bringing rites.

  • Participation in the wider Āṅgirasa sacrificial-poetic heritage that foregrounds Agni as Hotṛ and the founding mediator of yajña.

The rite, step by step

  • Prepare the altar/clean hearth and ritually purify the space (sprinkling, orderly arrangement).
  • Kindle Agni and ‘seat’ him—establish the fire as Hotṛ in the proper place (the hymn’s imagery of ni ṣadad / ny erire: setting him down).
  • Recite the hymn to invite Agni as messenger and comrade, aligning the rite with ṛta (‘his own law’).
  • Offer oblations while requesting protection from outer harms (durita), hostile speech (śaṃsa), and sin (agha).
  • Conclude with praise that spreads Agni’s fame and asks for prosperity and guarding (avase).

Offerings

  • Ghee (ājya)
  • Samidhs (fuel-sticks)
  • Grain/oblations appropriate to agnihotra-style offerings (as applicable)
  • Soma-related offering context may be implicit in broader ritual cycles, though the hymn itself foregrounds Agni’s oblation-bearing role
