Rishi: Atharvanic tradition (anukramaṇī attribution uncertain without external apparatus)
Devata: Vāc (Speech)
Chandas: Anuṣṭubh (likely; requires metrical confirmation against padapāṭha syllable count)
It recognizes that the same power of speech can bless or harm. The hymn asks that the beneficent mode dominate, so words become truthful, calming, and protective rather than cutting or curse-like.
In Atharvanic-style interpretation, they point to layered speech: an inward/mental voice, a breath-formed voice, and the outward audible voice. The verse warns that what ‘leaps forth’ as sound should be governed before it emerges.
Recite it quietly before important conversations, teaching, testimony, or conflict-resolution, with the intention to speak kindly and truthfully. The brief pause of silence after recitation reinforces restraint and prevents impulsive speech.
