Sukta 20

Rishi: Atharvanic tradition (hymn to Anumati; specific r̥ṣi attribution varies in ancillary lists)

Devata: Anumati (personified Consent/Approval)

Mantra 1

Inside Sukta 20

How it unfolds

  1. How it opens

The hymn opens by asking that Anumati approve the sacrifice among the gods, with Agni present as the bearer of offerings (yajña-authorization + conveyance).

  2. What it asks

Anumati is asked to work welfare and good, accept the offered oblation with delight, and grant progeny; she is also asked to come to the rite for good fields and good sons.

  3. Where its power lies

Her providence (pramati) is declared auspicious, and her arrival itself is treated as the rite’s enabling power—approval becomes protection and fruition.

  4. How it closes

The hymn seals the rite by asking Anumati, ‘divinely guarded,’ to protect this very sacrifice—placing the yajña under her continuing oversight.

Kind of hymn

Paustika (Prosperity/Increase) with domestic-procreative emphasis

What it is for

Divine approval of the rite leading to accepted offerings, protected ritual performance, welfare, good land, and the blessing of progeny/strong offspring.

Who it is for

Householders and ritual patrons (yajamāna) seeking fertility, household increase, and assured acceptance of offerings; also officiants reciting for the patron’s domestic and agrarian well-being.

Also used as

  • Shantika (ritual authorization and smoothness of performance)
  • Raksha (protection of the sacrifice)
  • Gṛhya/Domestic-procreative

The deity

Anumati is the personified power of consent, approval, and favorable intention—especially the divine ‘yes’ that allows a rite to be received among the gods and its fruits to mature in the human sphere.

Powers of the deity

  • Grants divine assent to offerings and petitions
  • Confers welfare (śam) and auspicious good (bhadra)
  • Bestows progeny and supports healthy generation (prajā, sujāta)
  • Secures agrarian prosperity: good fields/land (sukṣetratā)
  • Protects the sacrifice from obstruction, error, or hostile forces (rakṣā of yajña)
  • Aligns human intention with divine acceptance (manīṣā/‘being minded in accord’)

Why the deity is called

She is invoked to approve the yajña among the gods, to delight in the duly offered oblation, to protect the rite itself, and to grant domestic prosperity—especially progeny and thriving fields.

The seer

  • Atharvanic seer(s) (attribution varies in ancillary lists)Atharvan. Paustika and gṛhya-oriented charms: securing ritual authorization (anumatī), household welfare (śam), fertility/progeny (prajā), and protection of the sacrifice from impediments.

Other hymns of this seer

  • AV 7.19 (neighboring domestic/paustika context; attribution sometimes grouped in recensional lists)
  • AV 7.21 (adjacent hymn in the same kanda section; often transmitted with similar Atharvanic rubric)

Preparing for the rite

  • Establish a clean domestic or sacrificial space; seat the patron facing the fire (if maintained).
  • Prepare a simple havis/āhuti (as customary: ghee and/or cooked offering per local gṛhya practice).
  • Set intention (saṅkalpa): ‘for Anumati’s approval, welfare, and progeny; for unobstructed yajña.’

The rite

  • Kindle or attend Agni as havya-vāhana (oblation-carrier) and offer āhutis while reciting the verses.
  • Recite with emphasis on assent/approval formulas (anumatir manyatām; juṣasva) and the progeny request (prajāṃ… rarāsva).
  • Conclude by mentally placing the rite under Anumati’s protection (yajña-rakṣā), then complete the offering sequence.

What it needs

  • Havis/āhuti (general oblation; commonly ghee)
  • Fire (Agni) or a domestic offering setup
  • Optional: water for purification (ācamanīya/prokṣaṇa as per custom)

When

Performed at the start or authorization phase of a domestic sacrifice/oblation, or when undertaking fertility/household-increase observances; ideally before the main offerings so ‘consent’ precedes ‘fruit.’

The main substance

Havis/āhuti (typically ghee as the standard oblation)

How it is prepared

Prepare a simple oblation suitable to the household rite (commonly clarified butter). Offer into Agni with each recited verse, focusing on ‘acceptance’ (juṣasva) and ‘approval’ (anumatir… manyatām).

Frequently Asked Questions

Anumati is the personified power of consent and approval—the divine assent that makes an offering acceptable and lets the desired results (welfare, progeny, prosperity) mature.

It seeks approval of the yajña, protection of the ritual from obstacles, household welfare (śam), agrarian success (good fields), and procreative success (strong sons and progeny).

It is suited to household offerings or the opening/authorization of a rite: recited with simple āhutis into Agni, asking Anumati to accept the offering and bless the patron’s home with increase and children.
