Sukta 2

Rishi: Atharvanic tradition (Anukramaṇī attribution for AV 8.2 as a protective/healing sequence; specific r̥ṣi varies by school lists).

Devata: Śiva/auspiciousness as operative power; implicitly the protective efficacy of the mantra itself.

Chandas: Anuṣṭubh (predominant in this section)

Inside Sukta 2

How it unfolds

  1. How it opens

The hymn opens by positioning the patient within a protective Atharvanic field, immediately framing the crisis as a contest with Mṛtyu and harmful approaches.

  2. What it asks

“Let this man live; let him not die”—the central petition seeks restoration, the making of bheṣaja (remedy), and the blocking of Death’s access-route.

  3. Where its power lies

Brahman is explicitly fashioned as varman (armor): mantra is not only speech but a constructed defense that guards the person from the irresistible path of Death.

  4. How it closes

Protection is ‘sealed’ by extending auspiciousness into the patient’s immediate environment—especially through consecrated clothing/girdle—so that even touch becomes non-injuring and safe.

Kind of hymn

Bhaisajya (Healing) / Rakṣoghna (Apotropaic protection)

What it is for

To avert imminent or creeping death, restore strength and continuity of life, and protect the patient by making brahman an armor and consecrating clothing/contact as harmless.

Who it is for

Atharvanic healer/priest (bhaiṣajya-kartṛ), household ritualist, or caretaker reciting for a sick person, convalescent, or someone under perceived lethal threat/inauspicious influence.

Also used as

  • Rakṣoghna
  • Śāntika

The deity

Not merely a personal deity but the operative auspicious force (śivatā) that makes contact safe and turns the mantra into a living defense; set against Mṛtyu as the hostile pull toward dissolution.

Powers of the deity

  • Repels deathly influences and hostile agencies (rakṣas, durita, abhicāra)
  • Forms ‘varman’ (armor) as an energetic boundary around the patient
  • Consecrates objects of daily use (cloth, girdle) so their touch is non-injurious
  • Restores vitality by ‘raising up’ the person from debility
  • Transforms vulnerability (touch, pathways, liminal moments) into protected space

Why the deity is called

To establish an auspicious protective field around the patient—blocking Death’s approach, empowering remedy, and sealing the body through sanctified contact and mantra-armor.

The seer

  • Atharvanic (Anukramaṇī/śākhā-dependent attribution)Atharvan. Bhaiṣajya and rakṣoghna charms: restoring life-force, averting death-impulses, and sealing the body’s vulnerable points through mantra-as-armor and consecrated materials.

Other hymns of this seer

  • AV 8.1
  • AV 8.3
  • AV 7.53 (rakṣoghna-type sequences, school-dependent)

Preparing for the rite

  • Seat the patient on clean ground or a prepared seat; establish calm, silence, and intent for protection.
  • Purify with water (ācamana/sprinkling) and arrange the patient’s garment and girdle to be consecrated.
  • If available, prepare a small protective binding/amulet-string to ‘carry’ the mantra-armor concept.

The rite

  • Recite the sukta continuously as a protective sequence, with special emphasis on verses addressing Mṛtyu and those constructing varman (armor).
  • While reciting, touch or symbolically ‘clothe’ the patient with the consecrated garment and fasten the girdle, affirming harmless contact (saṃsparśa).
  • Conclude by sealing protection through a final recitation over the patient’s head/heart and a brief silent resolve (saṅkalpa) that Death’s path is blocked.

What it needs

  • Vāsas (garment/cloth)
  • Nīvi (girdle/waistband)
  • Water for sprinkling
  • Optional: protective cord/amulet (maṇi, thread), and a simple medicinal application understood as bheṣaja

When

Performed at the onset of severe illness, during dangerous symptoms, or when death-omens are feared; also suitable at dawn/dusk as liminal protective times.

The main substance

Vāsas (consecrated garment/cloth) and Nīvi (girdle) as protective contact-substances

Herbs

  • Bheṣaja (general medicinal complex; specific herbs not fixed in the cited verses)

Amulets

  • Protective cord/thread as ‘varman’ carrier
  • Consecrated cloth as wearable protection

How it is prepared

Sprinkle garment and girdle with clean water while reciting; then clothe the patient and fasten the girdle during the relevant mantras, treating the items as charged with śiva/harmless contact (adrūkṣṇa-saṃsparśa).

Frequently Asked Questions

To protect a sick or threatened person from Death’s approach and restore vitality by making mantra-power (brahman) into protective “armor,” including protection through consecrated clothing.

They mark the body’s everyday contact boundary. The hymn consecrates garment and waistband so their touch becomes auspicious and non-injuring, preventing harm from entering through contact.

Both. It ‘makes a remedy’ (bheṣaja) while also functioning as rakṣā: it names Mṛtyu as the adversary and counters it by constructing a protective field and armor through mantra.
