Attentive; concerned with proper transmission and protection of dharma
To whom may this ritual procedure be transmitted, and who is disqualified from receiving it?
Sacred procedure requires adhikāra (qualification): dīkṣā, śraddhā, and reverence toward guru and the sacred order; hostility and nihilistic skepticism block receptivity.
Before teaching or sharing ritual manuals, assess initiation/commitment; cultivate guru-bhakti and śraddhā to make practice transformative.
Do not teach/give ritual vidhi to the uninitiated, the skeptic, or the hostile to gods and brāhmaṇas; give it to the guru-devoted.
Proper transmission yields immediate sin-destruction for the qualified recipient; improper transmission is implied to be adharmic and spiritually unsafe (explicit penalty not stated).
For the qualified (guru-bhakta) recipient, the vidhi is ‘sadyah pāpa-praṇāśanam’ (immediate destruction of sin).
Varāha Purāṇa 39.39.76 (śravaṇa/śrāvaṇa as pāpa-mocana, presuming receptivity)
It reflects a common Purāṇic and Dharma-śāstra concern with controlled transmission of ritual knowledge, emphasizing initiation, ethical disposition, and teacher–student qualifications in premodern South Asian textual culture.
No geographic location is named in this verse; the content concerns eligibility and ethics of instruction rather than sacred geography.
Ritual teachings are to be restricted to qualified recipients—especially those initiated and devoted to the teacher—and not shared with those deemed unreliable or hostile, framing knowledge transmission as an ethical responsibility.
