Varaha Purana 174.53 — Adhyaya 174, Shloka 53

The Sanctifying Power of River Confluences: Release from the Preta-State and the Rite of Śravaṇa Dvādaśī with Vāmana Worship

tīrthasyaiva tu māhātmyaṃ preto bhūtvā śṛṇoti yaḥ || tasyākṣayapadaṃ viṣṇor bhavatīti mayā śrutam ||

FAQs

It highlights the Purāṇic emphasis on śravaṇa (hearing) as a transformative practice and shows how tīrtha literature integrates soteriology with sacred topography.

The verse refers to ‘that tīrtha’ within the Mathurā–saṅgama narrative setting.

Attentive engagement with instructive discourse (hearing māhātmya) is framed as a means of moral and existential elevation, even from a degraded condition.
