Bharadwaja (as mediated through the Manas’ overarching discourse)
Shanta
A doctrinal pivot in Bālakāṇḍ: establishing the Lord’s transcendence while justifying the necessity and sanctity of narrated divine acts (caritra) for devotion.
Kingship and authority should mirror divine ‘anīhatā’—action without selfish motive—governing for the welfare of subjects (bhakta-loka), adopting practical ‘modes’ as needed while remaining anchored in principled detachment.
The verse posits an absolute Lord who is not limited by predicates (name/form) while affirming that, by compassion toward devotees, He voluntarily becomes accessible through Nāma and Rūpa in līlā. Nirguṇa is thus ontological transcendence; saguṇa is pedagogical and salvific self-disclosure.
Traditional Manas exegesis reads the first line as an apophatic safeguard: the Supreme, in His absolute aspect, is not circumscribed by conceptual ‘name’ or sensory ‘form.’ The second line immediately supplies Tulsi’s devotional resolution: the same Lord, out of grace (not need), freely adopts describable names and visible forms as līlā for bhaktas. Commentators stress that ‘nirguṇa’ here means ‘beyond the guṇas’ rather than ‘incapable of qualities,’ allowing Saguna devotion without compromising transcendence.
Doha (approx. 13/11 mātrā pattern per half; two lines forming a doha)
Anuprāsa (phonetic recurrence in 'a' sounds), Virodha-ābhāsa (apparent contradiction: nirguṇa yet acts), Śleṣa/arthāntaranyāsa tendency (philosophical assertion followed by devotional resolution)
Vishishtadvaita-leaning synthesis (qualified non-dualism expressed through bhakti idiom)
Raga Bhairav (common morning gravitas for doctrinal dohas in Manas-path)
