"O child, O son of the Kakutsthas, the great charioteer Anshuman (who can fight with eleven thousand charioteers), wielding a strong bow followed the sacrificial horse (in order to protect it) in compliance with Sagara's wish.
Steadfast execution of entrusted duty—especially in service of yajña and royal command—constitutes kṣatriya excellence.
Model for niyama and dhṛti: guarding one’s ‘vow’ (saṅkalpa) with steadiness, as Aṁśumān guards the yajña-horse.
Karma-yoga: action performed as duty under rightful authority without wavering.
Īśā/Kaṭha-style emphasis on niyama and steadfastness (dhṛti) as a means to right action.
Vālmīki Rāmāyaṇa 1.39 (Sagara–Aṁśumān episode context); Mahābhārata (Ādi/Śānti): motifs of princes guarding sacrificial horse in aśvamedha narratives
Vedic aśvamedha tradition (Śrauta context; horse as yajña’s moving axis)
Rāmāyaṇa 1.38–1.40: Sagara’s aśvamedha, loss of horse, search leading to Kapila and Gaṅgā narrative
Anuṣṭup (śloka)
Commanding
Madhyama-gati, udātta emphasis on ‘māhārathaḥ’ and ‘mते स्थितः’
Dharma as duty and loyalty: Aṁśumān fulfills the king’s directive to protect the yajña, placing responsibility above personal ease.
Sagara assigns Aṁśumān to accompany and safeguard the sacrificial horse as part of the ritual’s successful completion.
Steadfast obedience and readiness (vīrya): Aṁśumān acts promptly and remains aligned with Sagara’s intent.
