Sukta 73

Rishi: Rigvedic provenance (Indra-stuti); in AV 20 the r̥ṣi attribution follows RV tradition for the borrowed hymn (consult AV 20 anukramaṇī for exact name).

Devata: Indra

Chandas: Triṣṭubh (RV-style stotra meter; AV 20 largely preserves RV meters)

Inside Sukta 73

How it unfolds

  1. How it opens

The hymn opens by dedicating all pressings to Indra and declaring the making of strengthening brahman-formulas for him (tubhyed imā savanā… brahmāṇi vardhanā).

  2. What it asks

May Indra be the ever-invoked helper among men, come swiftly to the good dwelling, and release abundance/sweetness for the patron.

  3. Where its power lies

No one attains Indra’s majesty; neither his heroic power nor his bounty fails—his arrival and giving are portrayed as inevitable and forceful.

  4. How it closes

The praise culminates in imagery of Indra’s vigorous motion and outpouring—shaking forth sweetness and scattering resistance like wind shaking a forest—serving as the hymn’s implicit sealing assurance.

Kind of hymn

Paustika (Prosperity) / Raksha (Protective praise)

What it is for

Increase of prosperity and security by invoking Indra’s undefeatable power and his generosity; apotropaic reinforcement that drives away impediments and stabilizes the patron’s well-being.

Who it is for

Householder-sacrificers and patrons (yajamāna), and AV ritualists employing RV-derived stutis for protection and increase.

Also used as

  • Raksha
  • Stotra (RV-style praise within AV 20)

The deity

Indra is the paradigmatic Vedic hero—lord of strength, victory, and generous distribution—approached through soma-powered praise that ‘increases’ him and makes his aid present among men.

Powers of the deity

  • Invincible heroic might (vīrya) and supremacy (mahimā)
  • Bestowal of wealth, cattle, and prospering bounty (rādhas)
  • Protection of patrons; dispersal of foes and obstacles
  • Swift approach to the sacrificer’s ‘good dwelling’ (su-kṣaya)
  • Soma-energized exhilaration that releases sweetness/abundance (madhu)

Why the deity is called

To dedicate the pressings and strengthening prayers to Indra so he arrives, protects the patron, and pours out prosperity—while no rival can reach or diminish his majesty.

The seer

  • Rigvedic provenance (consult AV 20 anukramaṇī for exact r̥ṣi name)Angiras. Stotra-based protection and prosperity charms (paustika/rakṣā) through Indra-praise; strengthening (vardhana) formulas allied to soma-rite efficacy.

Other hymns of this seer

  • AV 20 (RV-borrowed Indra-stutis; exact cross-refs depend on the AV 20 anukramaṇī mapping to the RV original)

Preparing for the rite

  • Establish a clean recitation space; seat the reciter facing east or toward the ritual fire if present.
  • If integrated into a soma context, prepare/acknowledge the savana (pressing) and mentally ‘assign’ the offering to Indra.
  • Compose intention: protection (rakṣā) and increase (puṣṭi/rādhas) for the patron and household.

The rite

  • Recite the six Triṣṭubh verses as an Indra-stuti, with emphasis on ‘vardhana’ (strengthening) and Indra’s unmatched mahimā.
  • Optionally synchronize recitation with offering gestures (āhuti/mental offering) at key praise-lines about soma/sweetness (sute, madhu).
  • Conclude with a short silent resolve (saṅkalpa) for obstacles to be shaken off ‘like wind a forest’ (vātó yathā vanam).

What it needs

  • None required for standalone AV use
  • Optional (contextual): soma/pressed offering (savana, sute) or a symbolic substitute in later practice

When

Preferably during a prosperity rite, before undertaking travel/contest, or at a soma-pressing time (savana) when available.

The main substance

Soma-pressing (savana) / pressed soma (sute) (contextual, implied)

How it is prepared

No material preparation is required in a standalone recitation; when embedded in a soma framework, the hymn accompanies or mentally aligns with the pressing/offering to Indra.

Frequently Asked Questions

It is used as an Indra-praise hymn to secure protection and increase—invoking Indra’s unbeatable strength and his unfailing generosity for the patron’s welfare.

No. It works as a stuti (praise) by recitation alone; soma is referenced by context (pressings/pressed offering) but is not mandatory for standalone Atharvavedic use.

In Vedic idiom, soma exhilarates Indra and ‘releases’ abundance; the hymn uses this imagery to express prosperity flowing out while obstacles are shaken away like a forest in wind.
