Durvāsā disse: “Contarei um segredo supremo—um mistério moldado pelos deuses—isto é, o que a Terra fez outrora quando afundava em Rasātala (a região inferior).”

A ‘secret’ teaching is embedded in cosmology: divine knowledge and divine action are disclosed when the cosmos is in crisis.
Approach purāṇic cosmology as sādhanā-supporting instruction—cultivate trust (śraddhā) that dharma can be restored even in overwhelming conditions, and seek the ‘guhya’ inner meaning beyond literal geography.
Earth’s descent into Rasātala sets the cosmological stage for the Yajña-Varāha paradigm: divine intervention restores cosmic order when the world-support (bhū) is submerged in primal waters.
Implicit (prelude): waters overwhelming the earth; the ‘secret made by gods’ anticipates Varāha as the sacrificial-cosmic agent who lifts Earth from the abyss.
The ‘guhya rahasya’ framing aligns with purāṇic pedagogy: cosmic myth as upadeśa—when dharma-supporting reality sinks, the Supreme manifests to re-establish ṛta/dharma; also hints at the dependence of the manifest world on the sustaining Brahman/Nārāyaṇa.
39.39.21 (mechanism of sinking into waters)
It exemplifies a common Purāṇic framing device: an authoritative speaker (here, Durvāsā) introduces a “guhya/rahasya” account, signaling a transition into an esoteric or foundational mythic episode connected to cosmography and the Earth’s crisis narrative.
Rasātala is identified—not a surface geography but a netherworld realm in Purāṇic cosmology, often treated by scholars as part of a multi-tiered imagined universe rather than a mappable terrestrial site.
The verse primarily functions as a narrative preface rather than a direct moral injunction; its philosophical emphasis is on attentive transmission of guarded knowledge concerning the Earth’s distress and cosmic order.
