Sukta 1.17
You two are indeed the comers to our aid, hearing the call of the inspired singer with mighty impulse; you are the upholders of the peoples.
Indra and Varuṇa are not distant ideals; they ‘come’ when the vipra (inspired consciousness) calls with māvat (mighty impetus—strong aspiration). They uphold the carṣaṇīs—human communities/strivings—meaning they sustain the evolutionary march by giving both force and law to collective life and to the many movements within the seeker.
Higher help responds to sincere, forceful aspiration; true sovereignty supports not only the individual but the collective order and progress.
responsive gods, inspired seer (vipra), upholding powers
Kāṇva style often stresses responsiveness of the gods to true invocation and their role as sustainers of human progression.
Highlights a key yogic law: descent answers aspiration; and the descent must also stabilize (dhṛ) the many parts of nature.
They respond to invocation and uphold the worlds—Indra by victorious force, Varuṇa by encompassing order and moral truth.
Descent of combined courage and conscience; power that both acts and restrains distortion.
Used in dual-deity praise within śrauta recitations; supports the sacrificer’s claim that gods attend the call.

Assuring and declarative; first pāda affirms arrival, second validates the call, third stabilizes with ‘upholders’.
Creates confidence that help is near; settles agitation by invoking sustaining order.
Assurance of response to invocation in dual hymn; supports communal rite and the seer’s call.
During invocatory sections before/around offerings to Indra-Varuṇa.
Calling and affirming divine attendance; establishing protection for the rite and community.
Chant when seeking support for leadership, group harmony, or maintaining integrity under pressure.
vipra: often ‘inspired poet’; linked to a root sense of trembling/thrilling with inspiration (√vip). dhartṛ: agent noun from √dhṛ ‘hold’, indicating stable support. carṣaṇi: ‘people’, also those who ‘move/act’ (semantic link to activity/striving), fitting inner reading as the active powers in the human.
divine aid (avaḥ) as responsive to inspired speech, support/sustenance (dhṛ) of human functions and society
Varuṇa as guardian of R̥ta; dhartārā indicates the sustaining of right order in the human field.
Vipra’s call is effective when aligned with satya; otherwise the ‘arrival’ is partial.
Descent and support: higher powers enter the lower to uphold its evolution.
Yoga of aspiration and descent; collective dimension of dharma/order.

‘Coming’ = felt descent of guidance; ‘upholding’ = inner spine of order that prevents collapse into old habits; ‘peoples’ = the many sub-personalities/energies.
Feel the ‘arrival’ of higher help in response to a clean call; then let it ‘uphold’ the scattered parts.
Call on inhale (havam), receive on exhale (gantārā); then pause briefly after exhale to sense support (dhartārā).
Supported equanimity with readiness to act rightly.
Make a short inner invocation from the heart; chant 12 times; then scan the body-mind for where support is needed (fear, anger, confusion) and offer that place to Indra-Varuṇa.
Standard Vedic accenting; keep compounds clear: dhartārā carṣaṇīnām.
First pāda declarative; second slightly intensified on ‘viprasya māvataḥ’; third grounded and slower.
gantārāḥ: long ā; final visarga light, stho ’vase: sandhi—pause lightly before ’vase, viprasya: v-i-pr; do not insert extra vowel, māvataḥ: long ā; dental t, carṣaṇīnām: retroflex ṣ; long ī; nasal ending -nām
Assured, protective, even.
