विधानम् · Dasaratha’s Funeral Rites and Ayodhya’s Mourning
Spoken by Vasistha to BharataSetting: अयोध्या (royal setting for funeral rites)
O prince of great renown, may God bless you! It is not proper on your part to grieve. It is time to perform the funeral rites of the king in the best way possible.
Grief is natural, but the timely performance of prescribed rites is the prince’s foremost obligation.
Practice of steadiness: acknowledging grief yet acting rightly at the proper time (kāla-dharma).
Turning from śoka to kartavya echoes the movement from moha to dharma—action performed as obligation rather than personal collapse (karma-yoga-like stance).
The implicit teaching of anityatā and steadiness of mind resembles Upaniṣadic counsel against śoka (e.g., knowing the transient body), though here framed ritually.
Bhagavadgītā 2.11 (general parallel): counsel against śoka while urging duty; Mahābhārata: Vidura/Dhṛtarāṣṭra consolations (episode-parallel)
Smṛti injunctions on antyeṣṭi as immediate duty
Ayodhyākāṇḍ: Bharata’s lamentation and Vasiṣṭha’s guidance surrounding Daśaratha’s death
अनुष्टुप् (śloka)
Commanding
Niṣāda-to-madhyama rise on ‘अलं शोकेन’, steady cadence on ‘प्राप्तकालम्’
Dharma requires that personal grief be restrained when duty demands timely action—here, the son must complete the father’s last rites as an obligation of filial and social order.
After Daśaratha’s death and Bharata’s return, Vasiṣṭha consoles Bharata and urges him to proceed with the king’s funeral rites without delay.
Steadfastness in duty (dharma-niṣṭhā): Bharata is guided to transform sorrow into responsible action.
