What the texts say
In the Bhagavad Gita, moksha, or liberation, is the goal of the sage whose mind is restrained and in whom desire, fear and anger have vanished. Bhagavad Gita 5.28 Later in the same text, Krishna says to take refuge in him alone, and he will liberate from all sins. Bhagavad Gita 18.66 The Ashtavakra Gita says bondage exists when the mind is attached to perspectives, and liberation when detached from all. Ashtavakra Gita 8.3 In the next verse, the same text adds that where there is no sense of I there is liberation, and where there is I there is bondage. Ashtavakra Gita 8.4
