Outer meaning

You two great ones, lords of the sacred seat, Indra and Agni—crush the rakṣas; let the atrins (devourers) be without progeny.

Inner meaning

When will and illumination are enthroned in the inner ‘sadas’ (the steady seat of consciousness), they can subdue the deforming forces (rakṣas)—impulses, doubts, and hostile suggestions that pervert the offering. ‘Atriṇaḥ’ are the inner devourers: energies that consume the fruit of practice (restlessness, desire, self-deception). Making them ‘aprajāḥ’ means cutting off their capacity to reproduce patterns—ending the lineage of habitual distortion.

Universal truth

Establish higher faculties as the governing seat within; then the repeating cycles of sabotage lose their power to propagate.

Themes

Protection, Rakṣas-subduing, Purification, Guardianship of the sacred seat

Other hymns
RV 1.21.4, 1.21.6 (same sequence)

Family tradition

Kāṇva-style pragmatic spirituality: victory over hostile forces is integral to making the sacrifice effective.

Significance

The seer frames spiritual life as governance: enthrone the right powers, then actively subdue the inner adversary so the offering is not wasted.

Devata
Indrāgnī
Epithets
mahāntā (vast ones), sadaspatī (lords of the seat), rakṣo-han (slayers of distortion—functional epithet here)

Cosmic role

Guardians and executors of the rite: they protect the sacred order from intrusion and ensure the offering reaches its true destination.

Inner power

Protective mastery: the combined force of clarity (Indra) and purifying will (Agni) that refuses falsehood and stabilizes the inner seat.

Where it is used

Protective invocation in Soma rite—warding off rakṣas at the sadas
