Agastya’s Vision of Varuṇa as Nārāyaṇa in Ilāvṛta

It reflects a common Purāṇic narrative technique: an ascetic figure challenges a learned interlocutor on recognition and perception, foregrounding themes of memory, identity, and delusion within didactic dialogue.
No specific geographic location is named in this verse; it functions as a philosophical and dialogic prompt rather than a sacred-geography marker.
The verse critiques mental confusion and inattentiveness, implying that clarity of perception and recognition (smṛti/jñāna) are prerequisites for sound judgment and conduct.
