Determination of the Origin and Procedure of the Ancestral Offering

Pitṛyajña/Śrāddha

पितृयज्ञेति निर्दिष्टा धर्मोऽयं ब्रह्मणा स्वयम् ॥ ततो ह्यतितरो धर्मः क्रतुरेकः प्रतिष्ठितः ॥

pitṛyajñeti nirdiṣṭā dharmo ’yaṁ brahmaṇā svayam || tato hy atitaro dharmaḥ kratur ekaḥ pratiṣṭhitaḥ ||

Dharma ini—yang dinamakan ‘pitṛyajña’—telah ditunjukkan oleh Brahmā sendiri; dan daripadanya ditegakkan suatu dharma yang lebih unggul sebagai satu upacara korban (kratu) yang tunggal.
