The Sacred Greatness of Lohārgala
The ‘Iron-Bolt’ Tīrtha

Curious, seeking clarity on ritual origin and efficacy
What is the true (tattvataḥ) origin (janiḥ) and inner rationale of this vrata/rite, and how should it be understood as karma?
True dharma is grasped through attentive listening (śravaṇa) to revealed instruction; vrata is karma with an intelligible origin and purpose.
Approach vrata with disciplined inquiry, receptivity, and Viṣṇu-centered intention; seek the ‘why’ of practice, not only the ‘how’.
Varāha addresses Devī (Pṛthivī/Bhū) directly and agrees to disclose a confidential teaching about vrata and its karmic origin.
Varāha as the revealer of ‘guhya’ dharma: the avatāra is not only a rescuer but the inner yajña-teacher who discloses the hidden link between karma (rite) and tattva (truth).
Implicit: ‘guhya’ teaching aligns with yajña’s esoteric layer (rahasya) rather than explicit body-mappings.
Karma is situated under tattva-jñāna: ritual gains highest meaning when oriented to Viṣṇu-smṛti and right knowledge, moving from pravṛtti (ritual action) toward nivṛtti (liberating insight).
Vrata and ritual practice should be learned from authoritative instruction, with attention to its karmic origin and proper performance as a ‘guhya’ (esoteric) dharma.
Right understanding and observance yields merit and spiritual access; misunderstanding or casual performance leads to diminished fruit and continued bondage to karma.
Mad-vrata (a Viṣṇu/Varāha-centered vow; name not yet specified in this verse)
Access to confidential dharma, accumulation of puṇya, and eligibility for the kṣetra/Viṣṇu’s grace implied by ‘madvrata’ teaching.
Varāha Purāṇa: recurring Bhū-Varāha saṃvāda framework; vrata/kṣetra-mahātmya sections that follow this opening
It exemplifies Purāṇic pedagogy: a deity-authority frames the teaching as tattva (principled truth) and as guhyam (restricted/initiatory knowledge), reflecting layered audiences in manuscript culture.
No location is specified yet; the verse introduces an explanatory section that later anchors the narrative in a particular kṣetra.
It emphasizes attentive listening and inquiry as prerequisites for receiving instruction, presenting knowledge transmission as disciplined and context-sensitive.
