Sukta 7.34
An exhortation to the community: “Take to yourselves the divine thought; send forth your speech god-ward.” It is a call to hold an inspired intention (dhī) and to shape utterance (vāc) so it reaches the gods.
The rishi asks the seekers to receive and establish in themselves devī dhī—an illumined intuition descending from the higher mind—and then to express it as devatrā vāc, speech turned toward the divine powers. Psychologically, thought must first be made luminous (received, held, stabilized), and only then can speech become mantra: a channel that carries force, clarity, and transformative suggestion into the being.
True speech is born from higher insight. When thought is purified into intuition and speech is aligned to the highest, language becomes creative power: it invokes, forms, and directs consciousness toward truth.
mantric discipline, speech as offering, inner-outer alignment, collective practice
Seer-family of Maṇḍala 7; associated with harmonizing Truth (satya) and Order (ṛta) through inspired speech and right governance of inner forces.
Vasiṣṭha’s line emphasizes the disciplined, law-abiding (Varuṇic) purification of mind and word so the inner sacrifice becomes exact, luminous, and effective.
The gods as powers of consciousness receive the rightly formed offering of thought and word; Dhī is the channel of revelation, Vāc the formative vibration that builds worlds.
Illumined intuition (dhī) descending into mind; mantric speech (vāc) that organizes and releases spiritual force.
Instructional/exhortative verse for the officiants/participants: align inner thought and outer speech as offerings; relevant to recitation correctness and intention.

4 pādas × ~11 syllables (approx.; exact count depends on saṃhitā phonetics and sandhi)
Forward-driving, declarative cadence suited to injunction and collective uplift.
Creates a steady ascent: first inward reception (abhi…dadhidhvam), then outward manifestation (pra…kṛṇudhvam), aligning mind and speech into one sacrificial movement.
Instructional/exhortative verse for the officiants/participants: align inner thought and outer speech as offerings; relevant to recitation correctness and intention.
As a preparatory or framing verse before recitation/offerings; also apt at the start of study, teaching, or collective chanting.
Mental ‘taking up’ of dhī (saṅkalpa of illumination) followed by voiced recitation as offering (vāc as oblation).
Before meetings, teaching, or meditation: silently invoke illumined intention, then speak only what serves truth and harmony.
dhī- and vāc- are paired Vedic faculties: vision and expression. √kṛ ‘to make’ → kṛṇudhvam. devatrā ‘god-ward’ is an adverbial formation indicating orientation of speech as offering. Middle forms (dadhidhvam, kṛṇudhvam) emphasize internal participation and self-formation.
dhī (revelatory thought), vāc (creative speech), orientation toward the divine (devatrā)
Right speech and right thought are instruments of ṛta; word becomes effective when aligned to cosmic order.
Speech becomes satya-vāc when born from devī dhī rather than desire or confusion.
Vāc as formative vibration: inner insight expressed becomes world-shaping force in life.
Proto-Vedāntic/Integral Yoga reading (Aurobindo): mantra as revelatory word-power from higher planes.
The ‘light’ is the clarified consciousness; the ‘current’ is the streaming of mantra-force from mind/heart into expression.
Receive higher intuition in silence; then let a single clear mantra/phrase arise without egoic distortion.
Viśuddha (throat) with support from Ājñā (brow)
Slow nasal inhale to ‘receive’ (abhi), brief kumbhaka to ‘hold’ (dadhidhvam), long exhale to ‘project’ (pra…vāc).
From quiet mind (manas-śānti) to illumined mind (vijñāna-touch).
Begin with 1–2 minutes of stillness; feel a descending clarity at the brow; hold it in the heart-mind; chant once, then speak/act only from that poise.
Triṣṭubh recitation with standard Vedic accents; preserve udatta peaks on key lexemes (devīm, dhiyam, vācām) as per śākhā tradition.
Keep the imperative verbs (dadhidhvam, kṛṇudhvam) clearly articulated; avoid flattening devatrā—let the accentual rise carry the ‘god-ward’ movement.
devīṃ: long ī; anusvāra as nasalization before pause, dhiyam: ‘dh’ aspirated; short i; avoid ‘diyam’, kṛṇudhvam: vocalic ṛ in kṛ; cluster -dhv- crisp, not ‘duvam’, devatrā: retroflex ṭ? (here ‘trā’ dental t+r; keep r tapped)
Clear, steady, slightly resonant in the throat; intention of offering rather than performance.
