Sukta 70

Mantra 1

वीलु चिदारुजत्नुभिर्गुहा चिदिन्द्र वह्निभिः । अविन्द उस्रिया अनु

Even the fastness didst thou rend with rending powers; even in the cave, O Indra, with thy impelling bearers. Thou foundest, thereafter, the ruddy kine.

Mantra 2

देवयन्तो यथा मतिमच्छा विदद् वसुं गिरः । महामनूषत श्रुतम्

God-seeking, so that their thought may reach straight unto the treasure, the sacred utterances—greatly have they devised the Heard Tradition.

Mantra 3

इन्द्रेण सं हि दृक्षसे संजग्मानो अबिभ्युषा । मन्दू समानवर्चसा

With Indra, forsooth, thou art made manifest, assembling with the fearless one—O Mandū—of equal splendour.

Mantra 4

अनवद्यैरभिद्युभिर्मखः सहस्वदर्चति । गणैरिन्द्रस्य काम्यैः

With faultless, overpowering powers the sacrifice, mighty, shines forth—along with the desirable companies of Indra.

Mantra 5

अतः परिज्मन्ना गहि दिवो वा रोचनादधि । समस्मिन्नृञ्जते गिरः

Hither from hence, O far-ranging one, come—down from heaven, or from the luminous realm. Herein the sacred utterances are duly set together and adorned.

Mantra 6

इतो वा सातिमीमहे दिवो वा पार्थिवादधि । इन्द्रं महो वा रजसः

From hence, or from the heaven, or from the earthly (realm) above, we seek the winning; Indra (we seek), or (from) the great expanse of the mid-air.

Mantra 7

इन्द्रमिद् गाथिनो बृहदिन्द्रमर्केभिरर्किणः । इन्द्रं वाणीरनूषत

Indra indeed the gāthā-singers (praise), Indra the hymn-crafters with their verses; Indra the voices have lauded.

Mantra 8

इन्द्र इद्धर्योः सचा संमिश्ल आ वचोयुजा । इन्द्रो वज्री हिरण्ययः

Indra indeed, with the two bay steeds in company, closely joined, comes hither—yoked by speech; Indra, the thunderbolt-bearer, golden-bright.

Mantra 9

इन्द्रो दीर्घाय चक्षस आ सूर्यं रोहयद् दिवि। वि गोभिरिन्द्रमैरयत्

Indra, for long continuance and for sight, caused the Sun to mount in heaven; widely, with the (bright) cows, he set Indra in motion.

Mantra 10

इन्द्र वाजेषु नोऽव सहस्रप्रधनेषु च । उग्र उग्राभिरूतिभिः

O Indra, help us in the prize-contests, and in the thousand-stake encounters; thou fierce one, with thy fierce succors.

Mantra 11

इन्द्रं वयं महाधन इन्द्रमर्भे हवामहे । युजं वृत्रेषु वज्रिणम्

Indra—rich in mighty treasure—Indra we invoke, even in the lesser need: the yoked ally, the Vajra-bearer, amid the Vṛtras.

Mantra 12

स नो वृषन्नमुं चरुं सत्रादावन्नपा वृधि । अस्मभ्यमप्रतिष्कुतः

Do thou, O Bull, bestower evermore, for us increase the waters—this cooked oblation here—unto us, thou whom none may turn aside.

Mantra 13

तुञ्जेतुञ्जे य उत्तरे स्तोमा इन्द्रस्य वज्रिणः । न विन्धे अस्य सुष्टुतिम्

In every onset, those praises which are the higher—of Indra, the Vajra-bearer—without them I win not for him the well-wrought laudation.

Mantra 14

वृषा यूथेव वंसगः कृष्टीरियर्त्योजसा । ईशानो अप्रतिष्कुतः

The Bull, like a herd-leader going foremost, by his might he drives the peoples on—sovereign, whom none may turn aside.

Mantra 15

य एकश्चर्षणीनां वसूनामिरज्यति । इन्द्रः पञ्च क्षितीनाम्

He who alone among the peoples governs the treasures—Indra of the fivefold habitations.

Mantra 16

इन्द्रं वो विश्वतस्परि हवामहे जनेभ्यः । अस्माकमस्तु केवलः

Indra, for you, from every side, encompassing, we invoke—away from other peoples: let him be ours alone.

Mantra 17

एन्द्र सानसिं रयिं सजित्वानं सदासहम्। वर्षिष्ठमूतये भर

Hither, O Indra, bring for aid the wealth that grants us winnings—victory-bearing, ever-overpowering—most abundant of all.

Mantra 18

नि येन मुष्टिहत्यया नि वृत्रा रुणधामहै । त्वोतासो न्यर्वता

By that wherewith, in fist-slaying might, we press them down—by that may we shut in the obstructers: aided by thee, we press them down with the steed.

Mantra 19

इन्द्र त्वोतास आ वयं वज्रं घना ददीमहि । जयेम सं युधि स्पृधः

O Indra, aided by thee, forth we go: the crushing thunderbolt we set in play; may we, in battle, wholly conquer the rival foes.

Mantra 20

वयं शूरेभिरस्तृभिरिन्द्र त्वया युजा वयम्। सासह्याम पृतन्यतः

We—with heroes, with the unpierced and steadfast—O Indra, with thee as yoked ally, we: may we overpower the battle-waging foes.
