Rishi: Atharvanic tradition (hymn-seer not securely fixed in all anukramaṇīs)
Devata: Āpaḥ (Waters) as healing and lustre-conferring powers
Chandas: Triṣṭubh-like cadence (mixed; Atharvanic meters often irregular)
Mantra 1
The hymn opens in a consecratory register (rājyābhiṣeka), presenting ‘páyas’ placed among beings as the basis of overlordship and rightful rule.
May the empowered waters—heavenly, atmospheric, and earthly—be applied to the recipient so that health, prosperity, and vārchas arise, and the peoples desire/accept the consecrated one.
By naming the waters’ threefold reach and their ‘milk-like’ essence, the mantra asserts that sprinkling transfers a real potency (vārchas) that makes status and vitality manifest and socially recognized.
The rite is sealed through final aspersion and the establishment of the recipient’s radiance/sovereignty as ‘acknowledged’ and enduring (anu manyatām—let it be owned as due).
abhi ṣiñcāmi varcasā
rājyābhiṣekaḥ
vyāghro adhi vaiyāghre
Bhaisajya (Healing) / Paustika (Prosperity-lustre)
To consecrate and stabilize status (notably kingship) by empowered waters/milk, conferring vārchas, vitality, and wide acceptance, while pacifying threats and inauspicious forces surrounding elevation.
Royal chaplain (purohita) or Atharvanic practitioner performing abhiṣeka; also applicable for any patron seeking restored vigor, beauty, and public regard.
Āpaḥ are living, purifying and nourishing powers—‘milk-rich’ waters that carry healing essence (páyas) and transferable radiance (várcas). In this sukta they function both as medicine (restoring life-force) and as consecration-fluid (legitimizing and strengthening rule).
To charge the consecration water so that sprinkling/unction transfers health and lustre to the recipient (especially a king), making prosperity and authority ‘stick’ while warding off the shadow of Death that follows great power.
Auspicious daytime (morning preferred) for consecration; also suitable after illness/recovery rites when restoring vārchas.
Āpaḥ (consecrated waters), optionally enriched with páyas (milk) as prosperity-essence
Consecrate water in a vessel by recitation; optionally add a small measure of milk and stir with kuśa. Use the charged water for aspersion/unction on head and body to transmit vārchas.
It consecrates a person—especially a king—by sprinkling empowered waters so that health, vitality, and visible lustre (vārchas) return, while prosperity and authority become socially established.
The hymn gathers all forms of water into one total power-source, implying that the consecration draws on a complete, cosmic reservoir of healing and radiance, not merely local water.
Its imagery is royal, but its mechanism—charging water and transferring vārchas by aspersion—also fits non-royal aims such as recovery after illness, restoring confidence/attractiveness, and removing dullness or inauspiciousness.
