Outer meaning

A prayer to Indra and Bṛhaspati to place within the worshippers a rich “rayi” (wealth/plenitude), described as hundred-increasing, possessed of horses, and thousandfold.

Inner meaning

The seeker asks the twin Powers—Indra (luminous force of the awakened mind) and Bṛhaspati (the soul’s priestly word, master of inspired discernment)—to establish in the being a plenitude of consciousness (rayi) that multiplies growth-impulses (śatagvinam), is rich in dynamic life-forces for right action (aśvāvantam), and expands into vast wideness (sahasriṇam). This is the inner “wealth”: intensified aspiration, energized execution, and wideness of being.

Universal truth

When illumination (Indra) and inspired truth-word (Bṛhaspati) work together, inner abundance arises: growth becomes manifold, energy becomes obedient to the higher aim, and consciousness widens beyond limitation.

Themes

Boon request, Spiritual wealth (rayi), Empowerment, Expansion into the Vast

Rishi
Vāmadeva Gautama
Lineage
Gautama
Other hymns
Rig Veda 4.1-4.58 (selected hymns attributed to Vāmadeva Gautama), Rig Veda 4.50 (Bṛhaspati hymn, traditionally Vāmadeva)

Family tradition

Vāmadeva is a principal seer of Maṇḍala 4; the Gautamas are noted for hymns of inner ascent where the gods are powers of consciousness and the sacrifice is psychological as well as ritual.

Significance

Vāmadeva’s vision often turns “wealth” into a symbol of inner plenitude and “cows/horses” into light and force—aligning with the Aurobindonian reading of the Veda as a record of yogic realization.

Devata
Indra-Bṛhaspati (dual)
Epithets
Vṛtrahan (slayer of the Coverer) — Indra, Brahmaṇaspati/Bṛhaspati (Lord of the Word), Supraketá (well-guided, clear-perceiving) (contextual epithet)
Related deities
Agni (inner priest and will), Soma (bliss-substance empowering illumination), Uṣas (dawn of awakening)

Cosmic role

Indra breaks the obstructions to light and releases the luminous plenitudes; Bṛhaspati founds and guards the right formation through the true Word and divine discernment.

Inner power

A combined action: the illumined mind-force (Indra) + the truth-speaking intuition that forms and protects the inner order (Bṛhaspati). Together they install growth, energy, and wideness in the seeker.

Where it is used

Soma-yajña context (invocation of Indra/Bṛhaspati for increase and strength)
