वृषाणं वृषभिर्यतं सुन्वन्ति सोममद्रिभिः । दुहन्ति शक्मना पयः ॥
vṛ́ṣāṇam vṛ́ṣa-bhir yatám sunvánti sómam ádri-bhiḥ | dúhanti śákmanā páyaḥ ||
Le Puissant, poussé par les puissants, ils pressent Soma avec les pierres ; avec adresse ils en tirent le lait nourricier (páyas).
They press the strong Soma, urged by the strong, with stones; they skillfully milk out the nourishing milk/essence.
The ‘strong one’ (Soma) is released by strong inner forces—disciplined will, concentrated aspiration, and steadfast energies. The pressing stones (adri) symbolize firm methods of tapas and discrimination that extract the essence. The result is ‘payas’—a milk-like nourishment: subtle sweetness and strength that feeds the inner gods and grows the soul.
Real nourishment is extracted by steady practice: when strength meets strength, essence is born. Skill (śakmanā) matters—right method turns pressure into sweetness.
Soma-ritual, tapas/pressure, nourishment, strength and abundance
The ‘pressers’ are both priests and inner workers; the rishi speaks from the collective discipline of Soma-yoga.
Affirms that Ananda is not accidental: it is extracted through a strong, skillful inner process and becomes true nourishment (payaḥ) for the being.
Life-giving essence pressed from the hidden; sustains gods and worlds like milk sustains life.
Converts pressure and effort into sweetness; gives stamina, joy, and a nourishing peace.
Soma pressing with adri stones; chanting during extraction and filtration

At the pressing (savana) moments; accompanying the physical act of pressing and collecting.
Synchronizes priestly action with mantra; invokes effective extraction and nourishing yield.
Chant before intense inner work (study, meditation retreat): remind the mind that pressure can yield sweetness when held rightly.
vṛṣāṇa/vṛṣa: from √vṛṣ ‘to rain, be potent/virile’ → abundant force. sunvanti: √su ‘press’. adri: ‘stone’ (pressing stone), often linked with firmness; instrumental plural adri-bhiḥ. duhanti: √duh ‘milk’. payas: ‘milk/sap’, nourishment; in inner sense, essence of delight/knowledge.
extraction of essence (sāra) from matter, tapas as pressure producing clarity, nourishment of the inner being (payaḥ)
Right process yields right essence; Ṛta is the law of effective transformation.
The ‘milk’ is the truth-essence within experience, not the surface agitation.
Essence drawn from concealment; nourishment produced through conscious action.
Aurobindonian: transformation through tapas leading to Ananda as substance (not mere emotion).
Stones = firm discipline; milk = refined psychic nourishment; pressing = concentrated aspiration and self-offering.
Transform effort into sweetness: hold discipline without harshness.
Maṇipūra (effort/strength) refined into Anāhata (sweet nourishment).
Box breathing 4-4-4-4 during chanting for ‘pressing’ steadiness; then relax into natural breath after.
Steady, strong, quietly sweet.
On each repetition, feel ‘pressing’ as gathering attention; feel ‘milking payas’ as releasing a subtle sweetness into the heart and nerves.
Observe Vedic accents on key nouns/verbs (sóma, sunvánti, dúhanti) per svara-marked text; keep the cadence strong on action words.
Emphasize the parallelism ‘vṛṣāṇam… vṛṣabhih’ to convey strength meeting strength.
‘vṛṣāṇam’ keep vocalic ‘ṛ’ clear, ‘adribhiḥ’ retroflex ‘ḍr’ cluster clean, ‘śakmanā’ palatal ‘ś’ (not dental ‘s’)
Firm, grounded, resonant; soften slightly on ‘payaḥ’ to suggest sweetness.
