Devata

Agni-Soma (dual deity)

Chandas

Gāyatrī/Anuṣṭubh-like? (requires verification; verse appears in a compact form but needs metrical count)

Inside Sukta 93

How it unfolds

  1. Where it opens

A direct summons: Agni–Soma are asked to hear the poet’s call and take delight in well-made praise, becoming joy to the giver.

  2. Development

The hymn moves from hearing and delighting in speech to concrete ritual participation—coming to the prepared oblation, accepting it, and acting as protectors by their own power.

  3. Climax

The central request intensifies into a blessing formula: place śam and yoḥ (peace and welfare) in the yajamāna and establish strength and thriving within the community of patrons.

  4. Where it settles

It closes by asking Agni–Soma to ‘fill our course forward,’ swell the luminous powers connected with offering, and make the sacrifice itself successful—obediently heard and effective.

The deity: Agni–Soma

  • In the VedaAgni and Soma are praised together as the two ‘vṛṣaṇā’ (mighty/virile powers) who delight in well-spoken hymns, come to the prepared offering, and become ‘suśarmāṇā’—good shelters—for the giver. They are asked to accept havis, strengthen the sacrificer, and make the rite obediently heard and successful.
  • Cosmic functionAgni mediates between human and divine realms by conveying offerings; Soma vivifies gods and humans through inspiration, rapture, and replenishment. Together they stabilize the sacrificial cosmos: ignition and ascent (Agni) joined with sap, expansion, and consecrated delight (Soma).
  • Inner significanceAgni–Soma symbolizes the union of disciplined will and luminous vitality: clarity that offers (Agni) with the inner nectar that empowers and gladdens (Soma). Psychologically, it is the harmonizing of effort and inspiration so that speech becomes effective, attention becomes ‘śruṣṭi’ (right hearing), and action yields peace (śam) and well-being (yoḥ).

The seer

  • Gautama Rāhūgaṇa (traditional attribution; within the Gautama/Gotama family)Gautama (Gotama) gotra · A prominent early Ṛgvedic seer associated with hymns of precise sacrificial address and the integration of ritual efficacy with ethical well-being (śam, yoḥ).

  • Gotama/Gautama seers are broadly remembered in Vedic tradition for shaping liturgical diction and sacrificial theology (family-level attribution across multiple sūktas).

The rite, step by step

  • Prepare the sacred fire(s) and arrange the offering space; establish ritual purity and intention (saṅkalpa).
  • Set forth (prasthita) the havis and, where applicable, prepare Soma (pressing/straining) according to rite.
  • Recite the hymn inviting Agni–Soma to hear the call and delight in the sūkta (opening invocatory verses).
  • Offer ghee/oblations into Agni while invoking Soma’s increase and inner gladness; request protection (suśarman) and acceptance (juṣethām).
  • Conclude with prayers for śam and yoḥ (peace and well-being), for strength among the generous, and for the sacrifice to become ‘śruṣṭimant’ (rich in right hearing/obedience).

Offerings

  • Ghee (ājya) and cooked oblations (havis)
  • Soma juice (where the Soma rite is performed)
  • Supplementary offerings as per śrauta setting (e.g., grains/cakes in associated sequences)

Frequently Asked Questions

Agni is the fire that carries offerings to the gods, and Soma is the sacred pressed draught that gives vigor and inspiration. Invoked together, they represent the complete sacrificial power: offering and its enlivening essence working as one.

It asks Agni–Soma to hear the prayer, come to the prepared offering, accept it with delight, protect the worshipper, and grant strength, prosperity, and especially peace and well-being (śam and yoḥ).

It is most naturally used in Soma-sacrifice settings and related fire-offering sequences, when oblations are set out and the priest invites Agni and Soma to partake and bless the yajamāna with a successful rite.
