Soma Pavamāna
This Soma Pavamāna hymn celebrates the purified Soma as a seer-like power moving upon the cosmic waters, bearing inspired speech and awakening both heavenly and earthly realms. Through repeated cleansing, Soma becomes radiant, wins the “cows” (rays/illumining powers), and is invited to come to the sacrificer bringing vasu—riches of light, force, and well-being.
Mantra 1
The Seer-force moves all around, pressing forward; set upon the wave of the ocean-stream, it bears the creative utterance, rich in many desires—powers of fulfilled seeking.
Mantra 2
When, by the illumined word, the five allied companies—workers of the act—shape and refine the sustaining power, they prepare the Soma-force for its right bearing.
Mantra 3
Then in the sap of this puissant one all the gods take delight, when he is clothed with the Rays (the illumining herds) and assumes his shining vesture.
Mantra 4
Casting out the impurities he runs forth in many ways, leaving behind the worn-out coverings of the body; here the yoked powers strike together (the obstruction) and win passage.
Mantra 5
He who, with the kin-powers of Vivasvat, the bright young one, is cleansed again and again—he makes the Rays (the illumining herds) his own as a shining garment.
Mantra 6
He passes beyond the two supports, moving crosswise; by the subtle path of the Ray he goes—he sets in motion the hidden fire (the inward kindling) for him who knows.
Mantra 7
The swift energies have come together toward him, cleansing the Lord of plenitude; the forceful ones seize his back—supporting and bearing him onward.
Mantra 8
Touching and awakening all things—heavenly and earthly—O Soma, come to us desiring our being; bring the riches: the fullnesses of light and force.
The hymn praises Soma Pavamāna—Soma while being purified and made radiant as it flows through the filter in the Soma sacrifice.
It presents Soma as a power of inspired vision and speech: as Soma is clarified, it ‘carries’ creative utterance and awakens illumination in the world and in the worshipper.
In Vedic symbolism, “cows” often point to rays or illumining powers (and also tangible wealth), while “vasu” means riches—especially the fullness of light, strength, and well-being that Soma is asked to bring.
