Sukta 99

Mantra 1

परो मात्रया तन्वा वृधान न ते महित्वमन्वश्नुवन्ति । उभे ते विद्म रजसी पृथिव्या विष्णो देव त्वं परमस्य वित्से ॥

Growing beyond measure by thy own body, none can reach thy greatness. We know thy two luminous realms and the earth: O Vishnu, O god, thou art the knower and master of the supreme.

Mantra 2

न ते विष्णो जायमानो न जातो देव महिम्नः परमन्तमाप । उदस्तभ्ना नाकमृष्वं बृहन्तं दाधर्थ प्राचीं ककुभं पृथिव्याः ॥

Neither being born nor having been born, O Vishnu, hast thou reached the utmost limit of thy greatness. Thou didst uphold the lofty, vast heaven above; thou didst set firm the eastern height and summit of the earth.

Mantra 3

इरावती धेनुमती हि भूतं सूयवसिनी मनुषे दशस्या । व्यस्तभ्ना रोदसी विष्णवेते दाधर्थ पृथिवीमभितो मयूखैः ॥

Full of the flowing plenty, rich in milking-force, bearing good pasture, it has become for man a thing to serve and cherish. These two worlds thou hast propped apart for Vishnu; and thou hast held the earth on every side with rays of light.

Mantra 4

उरुं यज्ञाय चक्रथुरु लोकं जनयन्ता सूर्यमुषासमग्निम् । दासस्य चिद्वृषशिप्रस्य माया जघ्नथुर्नरा पृतनाज्येषु ॥

Wide for the sacrifice you two made the world, bringing to birth the Sun, the Dawn, and the Fire. Even the deceits of the Dāsa, of the bull-lipped one, you two heroes struck down in the battles that press upon us.

Mantra 5

इन्द्राविष्णू दृंहिताः शम्बरस्य नव पुरो नवतिं च श्नथिष्टम् । शतं वर्चिनः सहस्रं च साकं हथो अप्रत्यसुरस्य वीरान् ॥

O Indra and Vishnu, firmly founded in your power, you shattered the nine strongholds and the ninety besides of Shambara. Together you struck down the hundred and the thousand radiant warriors of the irresistible Asura—clearing the way for the Light to recover its rightful kingdom.

Mantra 6

इयं मनीषा बृहती बृहन्तोरुक्रमा तवसा वर्धयन्ती । ररे वां स्तोमं विदथेषु विष्णो पिन्वतमिषो वृजनेष्विन्द्र ॥

This wide and lofty thought, O Vast Ones, O far-striding Vishnu, grows by your strength. In the assemblies, Vishnu, it has fashioned a hymn for you both; O Indra, in our fields of action swell for us the impulsions of the divine nourishment and power.

Mantra 7

वषट् ते विष्णवास आ कृणोमि तन्मे जुषस्व शिपिविष्ट हव्यम् । वर्धन्तु त्वा सुष्टुतयो गिरो मे यूयं पात स्वस्तिभिः सदा नः ॥

I make for you the vaṣaṭ-call, O Vishnu; accept my offering, O Shipiviṣṭa. May my well-shaped praises and words increase you; do you guard us always with your powers of well-being and right-going.
