Vasiṣṭha
Vāyu (with Indra–Vāyu context continuing; Manu and Uṣas/Sūrya as supporting figures)

This hymn of Vasiṣṭha invokes Vāyu in close partnership with Indra–Vāyu, inviting them to the Soma offering and asking for protection, strength, and well-being. It recalls the ancient, blameless gods who aided Manu in a time of obstruction by establishing the Dawn with the Sun—an image of restoring right order and clear vision for the human path. The poets (the Vasiṣṭhas) conclude by requesting enduring svasti (harmonious welfare) through their well-made praise.
Mantra 1
कुविदङ्ग नमसा ये वृधासः पुरा देवा अनवद्यास आसन् । ते वायवे मनवे बाधितायावासयन्नुषसं सूर्येण ॥
Will those ancient gods, grown in power and blameless, be won by our reverence? They, for Vāyu and for Manu when he was pressed by obstruction, caused the Dawn to dwell with the Sun—bringing the illumined order into the human path.
Mantra 2
उशन्ता दूता न दभाय गोपा मासश्च पाथः शरदश्च पूर्वीः । इन्द्रवायू सुष्टुतिर्वामियाना मार्डीकमीट्टे सुवितं च नव्यम् ॥
Desiring, like messengers, guarding so as not to fail, they traverse the months and the paths and the many former seasons. O Indra–Vāyu, the well-fashioned hymn that comes to you asks for your grace and for a new right-leading—fresh openings of the journey.
Mantra 3
पीवोअन्नाँ रयिवृधः सुमेधाः श्वेतः सिषक्ति नियुतामभिश्रीः । ते वायवे समनसो वि तस्थुर्विश्वेन्नरः स्वपत्यानि चक्रुः ॥
Rich in food of force, increasers of plenitude, wise in understanding—the white splendour clings to the yoked energies. For Vāyu they stand firm, of one mind; these men have fashioned all acts of good mastery and true possession of the self.
Mantra 4
यावत्तरस्तन्वो यावदोजो यावन्नरश्चक्षसा दीध्यानाः । शुचिं सोमं शुचिपा पातमस्मे इन्द्रवायू सदतं बर्हिरेदम् ॥
As far as the body can reach, as far as the force can extend, as far as the seekers can kindle by vision—drink here the pure Soma, O pure-drinkers. O Indra–Vāyu, sit down upon this seat of offering within us.
Mantra 5
नियुवाना नियुतः स्पार्हवीरा इन्द्रवायू सरथं यातमर्वाक् । इदं हि वां प्रभृतं मध्वो अग्रमध प्रीणाना वि मुमुक्तमस्मे ॥
Young and ever-renewing, with your yoked forces, rich in desirable hero-power—O Indra–Vāyu, come together in one chariot towards us. For this first essence of sweetness has been brought for you; then, satisfied, release for us the widenings and liberations within.
Mantra 6
या वां शतं नियुतो याः सहस्रमिन्द्रवायू विश्ववाराः सचन्ते । आभिर्यातं सुविदत्राभिरर्वाक्पातं नरा प्रतिभृतस्य मध्वः ॥
Those (yoked) forces of yours—hundreds and thousands—O Indra and Vāyu, that are rich in every desirable plenitude, gather to you. With them come down to us with clear powers of right finding; O two strong ones, drink of the honeyed delight that is offered and borne towards you.
Mantra 7
अर्वन्तो न श्रवसो भिक्षमाणा इन्द्रवायू सुष्टुतिभिर्वसिष्ठाः । वाजयन्तः स्ववसे हुवेम यूयं पात स्वस्तिभिः सदा नः ॥
Like eager steeds seeking fame, we Vasiṣṭhas ask you with well-fashioned hymns, O Indra and Vāyu. Striving to win the plenitude of force for our own self-mastery, we call you; do you guard us always with your harmonies of well-being.
Vāyu is primary, but the hymn strongly addresses the dual deity Indra–Vāyu, especially in the Soma-drinking context.
It recalls a divine act of removing obstruction and establishing luminous order—symbolically bringing clarity (Dawn) into full alignment with truth and vision (Sun) for human life.
It functions as an invitation and praise during Soma offerings, asking Indra–Vāyu/Vāyu to come, drink the purified Soma, sit on the offering seat, and grant strength and ongoing well-being (svasti).
