Vasiṣṭha
Uṣas with Savitṛ/Viśvānara in supportive roles (composite dawn-cosmic illumination frame)
Triṣṭubh (likely)
This hymn of Vasiṣṭha praises Uṣas (Dawn) as the revealer of the world, the “Eye” born by divine intention, who lifts up the immortal, universal light. Savitṛ and Viśvānara stand in support as cosmic illuminators, framing dawn not only as a daily event but as the manifestation of Ṛta (truth-order) and awakened vision. The poets recall the ancient seers and Fathers who discovered the hidden light and “brought Dawn to birth” through true mantras, and they end by asking for wealth, good fame, and lasting protection.
Mantra 1
Up has risen the immortal light, born for all; the god Savitṛ, the Universal Fire, has extended it. By the will of the gods the Eye has been born; Dawn has made manifest the whole world of becoming.
Mantra 2
The paths of the gods become visible within me; strengthened and well-fashioned by the powers of abundance they move forward. The banner-sign of Dawn has come into being in front; she turns back toward us, arriving over our human habitations.
Mantra 3
Those were indeed many days when she rose in the east with the Sun; from there Dawn moves around like a lover seeking, seen again and again—yet never returning as the same that has gone before.
Mantra 4
They, the ancient seers who were one in the gods’ common delight, holders of Ṛta, found the hidden Light along its track; with mantras of truth they brought Dawn to birth.
Mantra 5
Gathered on the same wide foundation, they know in unity and do not strive against one another. They do not violate the divine laws; strengthened, they advance with the powers of essential wealth.
Mantra 6
The Vasiṣṭhas, awakened with the Dawn, adore you with hymns, O fortunate one. Leader of the rays of Light, spouse of plenitude of force, rise for us, well-born Dawn—become manifest as the first.
Mantra 7
This Dawn, the leader of riches and of luminous true utterances, rising, is hymned by the Vasiṣṭhas. Bringing to us a wealth of far-reaching renown—may you protect us always with your harmonies of well-being.
The main deity is Uṣas (Dawn). Savitṛ and Viśvānara appear in supportive roles as cosmic powers that extend and uphold the light Dawn reveals.
The “hidden light” is the radiance of truth and knowledge concealed by darkness or ignorance. The “Eye” is awakened vision—right perception—said to be born by divine will when dawn (illumination) arises.
It can be recited at dawn as a prayer for clarity, right direction, and auspiciousness. Many use it before morning worship or meditation to invoke inner awakening and well-being (svasti).
