Vasiṣṭha

Devata

Morning litany to multiple deities (Agni, Indra, Mitra-Varuṇa, Aśvins, Bhaga, Pūṣan, Brahmaṇaspati, Soma, Rudra)

Chandas

Jagatī (probable due to longer line with repeated prātar; traditional classification often places such litanies in Jagatī)

This hymn is a dawn-time litany that repeatedly invokes a circle of deities—Agni, Indra, Mitra-Varuṇa, the Aśvins, Bhaga, Pūṣan, Brahmaṇaspati, Soma, and Rudra—so the day may begin in right order and auspicious power. It asks for bhaga (share of felicity), protection, and “svasti” (well-being) through all phases of the day. The close turns to Uṣas (the Dawns), praying for ever-renewed, prosperous dawns that “milk” ghee-like delight and sustain the sacrificer’s life-force.

Mantras

Mantra 1

At dawn we call Agni, at dawn we call Indra; at dawn Mitra and Varuṇa, at dawn the Aśvins. At dawn we call Bhaga, Pūṣan, and Brahmaṇaspati; at dawn we call Soma, and also Rudra—so that the whole being may be set in right motion at the day’s beginning.

Mantra 2

At dawn we call Bhaga, the victor of the morning, the formidable—Aditi’s son who upholds the worlds. Even the needy man who thinks of him, even the strong, even the king, says of that Bhaga: ‘May I partake.’ So too may we partake of the soul’s rightful portion of delight and increase.

Mantra 3

O Bhaga, our leader and guide, O Bhaga whose giving is true and right—lift up and bring forth in us this inspired thought. O Bhaga, generate us forward with rays of light and with the swift energies; O Bhaga, may we become rich in the powers of true humanity, full of the force of the soul.

Mantra 4

May we be even now possessed of the divine portion; and may we be so in the forward march, and in the middle of the days. And at the sun’s uprising, O givers of plenitude, may we dwell in the happy and luminous consent of the gods.

Mantra 5

Let Bhaga himself be the god who is full of the divine portion; by that may we too become possessed of the portion. You, O Bhaga, whom everyone indeed calls—be here for us the one who goes in front, the pioneer of the way.

Mantra 6

Let the Dawns bow together towards our sacrifice, as Dadhikrāvan moves to the bright goal. Let the near-coming Bhaga, finder of essential riches, be brought to us as swift horses bring a chariot.

Mantra 7

May the Dawns rise for us always, auspicious—rich in swift energies, rich in rays of illumination, rich in heroic powers. Milking the clarified delight, filled from every side, may you protect us always with states of well-being.
