This short Vasiṣṭha hymn praises Agni as the upward-rising flame and as Hotṛ, the priest who carries the offering on the path of ṛta (truth-order) to the gods. It depicts the gods gathering at the common ritual seat and asks Agni to perform the desired rite, culminating in a benediction for inspired hymn-power (arka) and lasting well-being (svasti).

Mantra 1

ऊर्ध्वो अग्निः सुमतिं वस्वो अश्रेत्प्रतीची जूर्णिर्देवतातिमेति । भेजाते अद्री रथ्येव पन्थामृतं होता न इषितो यजाति ॥

Uplifted, Agni has leaned toward the right thought of the Good; the returning flame-current moves toward the divine assembly. Like two pressing-stones taking the chariot-road, the Hotṛ, impelled, performs for us the sacrifice in the Truth (ṛta) and the immortality.

Mantra 2

प्र वावृजे सुप्रया बर्हिरेषामा विश्पतीव बीरिट इयाते । विशामक्तोरुषसः पूर्वहूतौ वायुः पूषा स्वस्तये नियुत्वान् ॥

The sacred seat (barhis) has been spread out in a fair order for them; like two lords of the clan they come to the firm place. For the peoples, at the meeting of Night and Dawn, first-invoked, Vāyu and Pūṣan arrive yoked for our well-being.

Mantra 3

ज्मया अत्र वसवो रन्त देवा उरावन्तरिक्षे मर्जयन्त शुभ्राः । अर्वाक्पथ उरुज्रयः कृणुध्वं श्रोता दूतस्य जग्मुषो नो अस्य ॥

Here on the earth-plane may the Vasus, the gods, take delight; shining, they purify in the wide mid-world. Make broad the downward path for us, O wide-striding ones; hear the messenger who has come to you from us.

Mantra 4

ते हि यज्ञेषु यज्ञियास ऊमाः सधस्थं विश्वे अभि सन्ति देवाः । ताँ अध्वर उशतो यक्ष्यग्ने श्रुष्टी भगं नासत्या पुरंधिम् ॥

For indeed, in the sacrifices, all the gods, worthy of the offering and eager, are gathered around the common seat. O Agni, in the rite desired, offer to them—obediently attentive—Bhaga, the Nāsatyas, and Purandhi (the fullness that builds up).

Mantra 5

आग्ने गिरो दिव आ पृथिव्या मित्रं वह वरुणमिन्द्रमग्निम् । आर्यमणमदितिं विष्णुमेषां सरस्वती मरुतो मादयन्ताम् ॥

O Agni, bring the inspired words from Heaven and from Earth; bring Mitra, Varuṇa, Indra, and Agni (the divine Fire itself in its powers). Bring Aryaman, Aditi, and Viṣṇu; may Sarasvatī and the Maruts take joy and increase the gladness of our offering.

Mantra 6

ररे हव्यं मतिभिर्यज्ञियानां नक्षत्कामं मर्त्यानामसिन्वन् । धाता रयिमविदस्यं सदासां सक्षीमहि युज्येभिर्नु देवैः ॥

He has given the offering to the worship-worthy through our thought-forms; he has fulfilled the desire of mortals without stint. May Dhātṛ establish for us the rayi that cannot be lost, abiding always; may we be able to accompany the gods who are to be joined (in yoga) now.

Mantra 7

नू रोदसी अभिष्टुते वसिष्ठैॠतावानो वरुणो मित्रो अग्निः । यच्छन्तु चन्द्रा उपमं नो अर्कं यूयं पात स्वस्तिभिः सदा नः ॥

Now, when Heaven and Earth are invoked by the Vasiṣṭhas, may Varuṇa the upholder of the Truth, Mitra the harmoniser, and Agni the divine Will become present. Let the luminous powers grant us a supreme hymn of light; and you, O gods, guard us always with states of well-being and safe passage.
