This hymn praises Agni as the ever-ancient fire kindled by the seekers of ṛta, the radiant house-lord who establishes order and carries worship. It asks Agni to accept the singers’ homage, to blaze with bright kindlings, and to help the mortal overcome earthly obstacles through his growing power.
Mantra 1
त्वामग्न ऋतायवः समीधिरे प्रत्नं प्रत्नास ऊतये सहस्कृत । पुरुश्चन्द्रं यजतं विश्वधायसं दमूनसं गृहपतिं वरेण्यम् ॥
You, O Agni, the seekers of ṛta have kindled together—you the ancient and ever-ancient—for help, O doer of might: the many-radiant, the adorable, the universal establisher, the dweller in the house, the lord of the home, the one to be chosen.
Mantra 2
त्वामग्ने अतिथिं पूर्व्यं विशः शोचिष्केशं गृहपतिं नि षेदिरे । बृहत्केतुं पुरुरूपं धनस्पृतं सुशर्माणं स्ववसं जरद्विषम् ॥
You, O Agni, the peoples have seated as the ancient guest—flame-haired—lord of the home: with vast banner of light, of many forms, touching the riches, bringing good shelter, of good giving, consuming what is old and toxic.
Mantra 3
त्वामग्ने मानुषीरीळते विशो होत्राविदं विविचिं रत्नधातमम् । गुहा सन्तं सुभग विश्वदर्शतं तुविष्वणसं सुयजं घृतश्रियम् ॥
O Agni, the human communities aspire to you—knower of the true offering and discerner, the most capable giver of the inner riches. Though you dwell hidden in the secrecy, O Fortunate One, you are the all-revealing Vision; with puissant resonance you lead the sacrifice well, and you shine with the splendour of the clarified consciousness (ghṛta).
Mantra 4
त्वामग्ने धर्णसिं विश्वधा वयं गीर्भिर्गृणन्तो नमसोप सेदिम । स नो जुषस्व समिधानो अङ्गिरो देवो मर्तस्य यशसा सुदीतिभिः ॥
O Agni, foundation and support everywhere, we approach you with our words of affirmation, praising and bowing. Accept us, O Aṅgiras, as you blaze forth—O God—making the mortal grow in luminous glory by your bright kindlings.
Mantra 5
त्वमग्ने पुरुरूपो विशेविशे वयो दधासि प्रत्नथा पुरुष्टुत । पुरूण्यन्ना सहसा वि राजसि त्विषिः सा ते तित्विषाणस्य नाधृषे ॥
You, O Agni, are of many forms; in each community (and in each part of us) you set the powers of life as of old, O much-praised. By force you shine forth, dispensing many foods—many nourishments of the being; and that blaze of yours, when you are kindled into full intensity, none can withstand.
Mantra 6
त्वामग्ने समिधानं यविष्ठ्य देवा दूतं चक्रिरे हव्यवाहनम् । उरुज्रयसं घृतयोनिमाहुतं त्वेषं चक्षुर्दधिरे चोदयन्मति ॥
You, O Agni, when kindled, O youngest and ever-new, the gods have made their messenger, the bearer of the oblation. Wide in your forward drive, with your source in the clarified light, invoked by offering—you are set as the fierce Eye, impelling the thought toward its right movement.
Mantra 7
त्वामग्ने प्रदिव आहुतं घृतैः सुम्नायवः सुषमिधा समीधिरे । स वावृधान ओषधीभिरुक्षितोऽभि ज्रयांसि पार्थिवा वि तिष्ठसे ॥
You, O Agni, invoked from the higher heaven and poured with clarified light, the seekers of delight kindle you with good fuel. Growing, sprinkled with the herbs, you stand forth over the earthly resistances and obstacles, spreading beyond them.
It is a hymn to Agni, praising him as the radiant household fire who establishes order (ṛta), carries offerings, and grants help and strength to the worshipper.
Because the sacred fire is central to the Vedic household rite: Agni is treated as the protector and master of the ritual space, receiving offerings and sustaining prosperity.
It describes Agni’s growing flame and power as rising beyond resistances—both practical difficulties in life and inner hindrances—so the worshipper can proceed successfully in the rite and in conduct.
