Sukta 10.9
Sindhudvīpa Āmbara (traditional Anukramaṇī attribution for RV 10.9, Āpaḥ-sūkta)
Āpaḥ (Waters)
Gāyatrī (3 pādas of 8 syllables)
RV 10.9 is a hymn to the Waters (Āpaḥ), praised as sources of delight, nourishment, strength, clear vision, and healing. The poet petitions them for vitality and medicine-like purification, and culminates in a sense of intimate communion with their rasa (essence), drawing Agni into that renewed, luminous state.
Mantra 1
O Waters, you are indeed the makers of delight; set in us the nourishing energy, for the great battle and for the seeing.
Mantra 2
That most auspicious essence of yours—share it here with us, O Mothers, as eager mothers give of themselves.
Mantra 3
To him we would fittingly go—he for whose abiding home you quicken; and, O Waters, you also bring birth in us.
Mantra 4
May the divine Waters become for us a blessing and a help for our fulfilment; may they flow to us with peace and with the delight that brings well-being.
Mantra 5
O Waters, sovereign over treasures and dwelling in the peoples, I ask from you the remedy—the healing force that sets the being right.
Mantra 6
Within the waters Soma spoke to me: “Inwardly are all healings; and Agni too, the universal benefactor.”
Mantra 7
O Waters, fill me with the healing power, a sure protection for my embodied being; and grant that I may long behold the Sun (the clear seeing).
Mantra 8
This, O Waters—carry it away: whatever distress and crookedness is in me; whether I have done violence in rebellion, or whether in speech I have fallen into falsehood.
Mantra 9
O Waters, today I have moved with you; in the rasa we have come into harmony. O Agni rich with plenitude, come here; join me wholly with your luminous force.
It praises the Waters as living divine powers that bring joy, nourishment, and purification, and it asks them for strength, clear perception, and healing.
Because water is seen not only as physically cleansing but also as restoring wholeness—washing away impurity and imbalance and returning health and vitality.
It is commonly recited during purification (ācamana/prokṣaṇa), before worship or fire-rituals, and in prayers for health—using clean water as the ritual support for the mantra’s intent.
