Sukta 133

Mantra 1

प्रो ष्वस्मै पुरोरथमिन्द्राय शूषमर्चत । अभीके चिदु लोककृत्संगे समत्सु वृत्रहास्माकं बोधि चोदिता नभन्तामन्यकेषां ज्याका अधि धन्वसु ॥

Set forth for him the fore-chariot—sing force for Indra. Even in close quarters, the maker of the worlds, the slayer of obstruction in the clash of battles—wake for us as the inspirer. Let the bowstrings of the others slacken upon their bows.

Mantra 2

त्वं सिन्धूँरवासृजोऽधराचो अहन्नहिम् । अशत्रुरिन्द्र जज्ञिषे विश्वं पुष्यसि वार्यं तं त्वा परि ष्वजामहे नभन्तामन्यकेषां ज्याका अधि धन्वसु ॥

You released the rivers downward; you slew the Serpent. Unopposed, O Indra, you are born; you foster all that is choice and desirable. Therefore we embrace you all around—let the others’ bowstrings slacken on their bows.

Mantra 3

वि षु विश्वा अरातयोऽर्यो नशन्त नो धियः । अस्तासि शत्रवे वधं यो न इन्द्र जिघांसति या ते रातिर्ददिर्वसु नभन्तामन्यकेषां ज्याका अधि धन्वसु ॥

Scatter away all the forces of ill-will that would destroy our inspired thoughts. Thou art the archer of the slaying shaft against the adversary who seeks to strike us down, O Indra. And the giving of thy riches—thy power of luminous plenitude—let it be ours; let the bowstrings of other claimants slacken upon their bows.

Mantra 4

यो न इन्द्राभितो जनो वृकायुरादिदेशति । अधस्पदं तमीं कृधि विबाधो असि सासहिर्नभन्तामन्यकेषां ज्याका अधि धन्वसु ॥

Whoever among men, wolf-desiring, points at us from every side—make him fall to the lower footing. Thou art the strong repeller, the overpowerer; let the bowstrings of others slacken upon their bows.

Mantra 5

यो न इन्द्राभिदासति सनाभिर्यश्च निष्ट्यः । अव तस्य बलं तिर महीव द्यौरध त्मना नभन्तामन्यकेषां ज्याका अधि धन्वसु ॥

Whoever assails us, O Indra—whether near of kin or a stranger—overturn his force; cast it down as the vast heaven presses down by its own mass. Let the bowstrings of others slacken upon their bows.

Mantra 6

वयमिन्द्र त्वायवः सखित्वमा रभामहे । ऋतस्य नः पथा नयाति विश्वानि दुरिता नभन्तामन्यकेषां ज्याका अधि धन्वसु ॥

We, O Indra, who belong to thee, lay hold of thy friendship. Lead us by the path of Ṛta, so that all the difficult passages and wrong turnings fall away. Let the bowstrings of others slacken upon their bows.

Mantra 7

अस्मभ्यं सु त्वमिन्द्र तां शिक्ष या दोहते प्रति वरं जरित्रे । अच्छिद्रोध्नी पीपयद्यथा नः सहस्रधारा पयसा मही गौः ॥

For us, O Indra, teach and grant that boon which yields its choicest flow to the singer in return. So may the unbroken-uddered Cow of plenty fill us—vast, thousand-streaming—with her milk of nourishing light.
