What the texts say
In the Bhagavata Purana, Rohini is the mother of Balarama and one of the wives of Vasudeva, Krishna's father. Bhagavatam 9.24.45, 10.36.17 Devaki, Krishna's mother, was the chief of those wives. Bhagavatam 9.24.45, 10.36.17 The same Purana tells how the Lord told his power, Yoga-maya, to move Balarama from Devaki's womb into the womb of Rohini. Bhagavatam 10.2.8, 10.2.15, 10.1.8 Rohini was living in Vraja at the home of the cowherd Nanda, where other wives of Vasudeva lived in hiding. Bhagavatam 10.2.7 There, Rohini and mother Yashoda, along with other elderly gopis, waved a cow's switch to protect the child Krishna. Bhagavatam 10.6.19
