Sukta 9

Mantra 1

शान्तिः। ९ पञ्चपदा ककुम्मती, १२ त्र्यवसाना सप्तपदाऽष्टिः, १४ चतुष्पदा संकृतिः। शान्ता द्यौः शान्ता पृथिवी शान्तमिदमुर्व१न्तरिक्षम्। शान्ता उदन्वतीरापः शान्ता नः सन्त्वोषधीः

Peace! Pacified be Heaven, pacified Earth; pacified be this wide Mid-air. Pacified be the Waters, ocean-bearing; pacified for us be the Herbs.

Mantra 2

शान्तानि पूर्वरूपाणि शान्तं नो अस्तु कृताकृतम्। शान्तं भूतं च भव्यं च सर्वमेव शमस्तु नः

Peaceful be the fore-signs; peaceful for us be what is done and what is left undone. Peaceful be the past and peaceful the future; yea, let all without exception be peace for us.

Mantra 3

इयं या परमेष्ठिनी वाग् देवी ब्रह्मसंशिता । ययैव ससृजे घोरं तयैव शान्तिरस्तु नः

This—she who is supreme—Speech, the Goddess compacted with brahman: by her indeed the dreadful was sent forth; by that same power let peace be ours.

Mantra 4

इदं यत् परमेष्ठिनं मनो वां ब्रह्मसंशितम्। येनैव ससृजे घोरं तेनैव शान्तिरस्तु नः

This Mind, which is supreme, compacted with brahman for you twain: by it indeed the dreadful was sent forth; by that same let peace be ours.

Mantra 5

इमानि यानि पञ्चेन्द्रियाणि मनःषष्ठानि मे हृदि ब्रह्मणा संशितानि । यैरेव ससृजे घोरं तैरेव शान्तिरस्तु नः

These five sense-powers, with mind the sixth, that in my heart are compacted by brahman—by them indeed the dreadful was sent forth; by those same let peace be ours.

Mantra 6

शं नो मित्रः शं वरुणः शं विष्णुः शं प्रजापतिः । शं न इन्द्रो बृहस्पतिः शं नो भवत्वर्यमा

Welfare to us be Mitra, welfare Varuṇa; welfare be Viṣṇu, welfare Prajāpati. Welfare to us be Indra and Bṛhaspati; welfare to us let Aryaman be.

Mantra 7

शं नो मित्रः शं वरुणः शं विवस्वांछमन्तकः । उत्पाताः पार्थिवान्तरिक्षाः शं नो दिविचरा ग्रहाः

Weal be to us from Mitra, weal from Varuṇa; weal from Vivasvant, and weal from Antaka. The portents, terrestrial and of mid-air—may the heaven-roaming Seizers be weal to us.

Mantra 8

शं नो भूमिर्वेप्यमाना शमुल्का निर्हतं च यत्। शं गावो लोहितक्षीराः शं भूमिरव तीर्यतीः॥८ नक्षत्रमुल्काभिहतं शमस्तु नः शं नोऽभिचाराः शमु सन्तु कृत्याः । शं नो निखाता वल्गाः शमुल्का देशोपसर्गाः शमु नो भवन्तु

Weal to us be Earth when she is trembling; weal the meteor, and whatever is smitten down. Weal be the cows with ruddy milk; weal be Earth, safely to be crossed. The constellation struck by a meteor—let it be weal to us; weal to us be hostile sorceries, and weal indeed be the kṛtyā-spells. Weal to us be the buried stakes; weal the meteor; the region’s visitations—let them be weal to us.

Mantra 9

शं नो ग्रहाश्चान्द्रमसाः शमादित्यश्च राहुणा। शं नो मृत्युर्धूमकेतुः शं रुद्रास्तिग्मतेजसः

Weal to us be the lunar Seizers; weal the Āditya, with Rāhu. Weal to us be Death, the smoke-bannered; weal the Rudras of keen splendour.

Mantra 10

शं रुद्राः शं वसवः शमादित्याः शमग्नयः । शं नो महर्षयो देवाः शं देवाः शं बृहस्पतिः

Weal be the Rudras, weal the Vasus; weal the Ādityas, weal the Fires. Weal to us be the great Seer-gods; weal the Gods—weal Bṛhaspati.

Mantra 11

ब्रह्म प्रजापतिर्धाता लोका वेदाः सप्तऋषयोऽग्नयः । तैर्मे कृतं स्वस्त्ययनमिन्द्रो मे शर्म यच्छतु ब्रह्मा मे शर्म यच्छतु । विश्वे मे देवाः शर्म यच्छन्तु सर्वे मे देवाः शर्म यच्छन्तु

Brahman, Prajāpati, Dhātṛ, the Worlds, the Vedas, the Seven Seers, the Fires—by these for me is wrought a path of welfare. Let Indra grant me shelter; let Brahmā grant me shelter. Let all the Gods grant me shelter; let all the Gods, every one, grant me shelter.

Mantra 12

यानि कानि चिच्छान्तानि लोके सप्तऋषयो विदुः । सर्वाणि शं भवन्तु मे शं मे अस्त्वभयं मे अस्तु

Whatsoever things, of whatever sort, are here in the world held pacified, as the Seven Seers know—let them all become welfare unto me; let welfare be mine; let fearlessness be mine.

Mantra 13

पृथिवी शान्तिरन्तरिक्षं शान्तिर्द्यौः शान्तिरापः शान्तिरोषधयः शान्तिर्वनस्पतयः शान्तिर्विश्वे मे देवाः शान्तिः सर्वे मे देवाः शान्तिः शान्तिः शान्तिः शान्तिभिः । ताभिः शान्तिभिः सर्व शान्तिभिः शमयामोऽहं यदिह घोरं यदिह क्रूरं यदिह पापं तच्छान्तं तच्छिवं सर्वमेव शमस्तु नः

Peace be to Earth; peace to the Mid-air; peace to Heaven; peace to the Waters; peace to the Herbs; peace to the Forest-trees. Peace be all the Gods to me; peace be all the Gods to me—peace, peace, peace, with peaces. With those peaces, with all peaces, I do here pacify: if here be aught dreadful, if here be aught cruel, if here be aught evil—let that be pacified, let that be gracious; let all, even all, be welfare unto us.
