Outer meaning

I place for you this inspired thought in the Waters, a light-winning dhī by which the Navagvas crossed the ten months. By this dhī may we be guarded by the gods; by this dhī may we pass beyond distress.

Inner meaning

Dhī is the inspired, truth-birthing intelligence (Aurobindo/Kashyap: a power of consciousness that forms right perception and right word). The Rishi ‘places’ this dhī ‘in the Waters’—establishes it in the subtle, flowing consciousness where inspiration and purification occur, so it can become universally accessible and renewing. This dhī is ‘svarṣā’—it wins svar (the higher light/plane). By it the Navagvas cross the ‘ten months’: the long inner incubation is traversed by sustained inspired intelligence, not by mere effort. The prayer turns practical: may this dhī bring divine protection (devagopāḥ—guarded by the gods, i.e., by higher powers) and enable us to overpass aṃhas—distress, sinuous crookedness, the constriction of falsehood and suffering.

Universal truth

Inspired truth-intelligence, grounded in a purified, receptive consciousness, carries us through long periods of obscurity and protects the journey, enabling us to transcend suffering and deformation.

Themes

installing dhī in life-force, initiation cycle of Navagvas, divine protection, overcoming distress

Family tradition

Ātreya tradition highlights dhī (inspired vision) as the operative instrument of realization, often linking it with waters (āpaḥ) as the medium of purification and descent of higher light.

Significance

This is a sādhanā-verse: it teaches the method—establish dhī in the waters of consciousness, let it win the higher light, and rely on it for protection and crossing beyond distress.

Devata
Dhī (as operative power) with Āpaḥ and the Gods (Devāḥ)
Epithets
Svarṣā (light-winning), Devagopā (god-guarded, as result)
Related deities
Āpaḥ, Sarasvatī (dhī/flow), Agni (seer-will), Indra (illumined mind)

Cosmic role

Dhī mediates between higher truth and human mind; Āpaḥ carry and purify; the Gods maintain the order and protect the realization.

Inner power

Inspired intelligence that brings down light and organizes the being; receptive flow that sustains it; protective higher forces that prevent relapse.

Where it is used

Soma/Āpaḥ-related recitation; dhī as offering (contextual)
