A ray was stretched crosswise—was it below or above? There were seed-bearers; there were mighty powers: self-law beneath, and forward-impulse beyond.
After the first seed of mind, a differentiating ‘ray’ (raśmi) extends—an axis of relation that makes above/below, inner/outer possible. Yet the seer keeps the ambiguity: the planes are not fixed. ‘Retodhāḥ’ are powers that carry the generative seed (ideative/vital potencies), ‘mahimānaḥ’ are vast formative mights. ‘Svadhā’ is the inherent law/substance of nature (the automatic self-ordering below), while ‘prayatiḥ’ is the conscious forward drive (aspiration/evolutionary push) from beyond—pressing the manifestation upward.
In any growth process, two forces cooperate: an underlying automatic nature (habits, instincts, self-law) and a transcending impulse (aspiration, evolutionary urge). The ‘ray’ is the discernment that can align them—turning ambiguity into direction.
Cosmogony, Axis and linkage, Emergence of order
Speculative, paradox-friendly Vedic inquiry; uses spatial riddles to indicate planes of consciousness.
He maps the emergence of cosmic structure as a play of planes and powers, but refuses premature certainty—training the seeker to hold ambiguity until a higher seeing organizes it.
Establish differentiation and generative continuity; uphold the developing cosmos through immanent order and transcendent drive.
Capacity to carry a ‘seed’ of intention into forms (retodhāḥ) and to expand/stabilize consciousness (mahimānaḥ); balancing habit-nature (svadhā) with aspiration (prayatiḥ).
Speculative; imagery later aligns with ‘weaving’ metaphors of sacrifice and cosmos but here remains pre-ritual cosmology.

Riddle-like alternation; the repeated ‘svid’ creates a hovering uncertainty; then the cadence firms on ‘svadhā… prayatiḥ’.
Induces a poised, investigative mind—able to witness polarities without collapsing into a fixed conclusion; ends with a felt twofold force (immanent + transcendent).
Speculative; imagery later aligns with ‘weaving’ metaphors of sacrifice and cosmos but here remains pre-ritual cosmology.
Recited in contemplative study; can be used before decision-making to sense ‘below’ (habit) and ‘above’ (higher call).
As a practical inner ritual: after chanting, journal two columns—‘svadhā (what nature repeats)’ and ‘prayatiḥ (what the soul presses toward)’, then choose one aligning action.
raśmi (ray/cord) relates to √raś ‘to stretch/extend’ and overlaps with imagery of weaving/connection. √tan ‘stretch’ (vitata) is a common Vedic cosmogonic verb. pra-yati (√yat ‘to go, strive’) expresses an onward drive of manifestation; svadhā again indicates intrinsic grounding.
vertical polarity (below/above) not yet resolved, self-law (svadhā) vs transcendent impulse (prayati), generation (retaḥ) as formative principle
Rita begins to appear as structured relation—ray/axis and lawful ordering (svadhā) moving toward higher harmony (prayatiḥ).
Satya as the right alignment of below and above along the ray of consciousness.
Formation of cosmic axes and planes; emergence of generative carriers and vast stabilizers; dual engine of manifestation.
Anticipates later ‘lower prakṛti / higher puruṣa’ language, but keeps it fluid; compatible with integral-yogic ascent and transformation motifs.
sunrise horizon-line (symbolic)
Ray = discernment-thread; below/above = instinctual vs luminous mind; seed-bearers = carriers of intention into action; self-law vs aspiration = habit-energy vs evolutionary will.
Sense the ‘ray’ as the central channel of awareness; observe what in you is ‘below’ (automatic patterns) and what is ‘above’ (quiet higher guidance).
Suṣumṇā focus; Ājñā for discernment of planes; Mūlādhāra (svadhā) and Sahasrāra (prayatiḥ) as polar supports
Alternate: inhale imagining a ray rising (above), exhale grounding (below); keep attention on the central line.
Witnessing polarity without conflict; alignment state where immanent law and transcendent push cooperate.
After chanting, sit upright and visualize a thin luminous thread from base to crown. On each breath, feel ‘svadhā’ stabilizing and ‘prayatiḥ’ uplifting—no forcing, only alignment.
Triṣṭubh; keep the interrogative ‘svid’ lightly lifted; avoid turning questions into dramatic rises—maintain Vedic restraint.
Mark the contrast: ‘adhaḥ svid… upari svid…’ with equal weight; then firm the ending on ‘svadhā… prayatiḥ’.
(tiraścīno): ‘śc’ cluster clear; long ī, (vitato): dental ‘t’; keep vowels short, (raśmiḥ): ‘ś’ palatal; visarga light, (āsī3t): maintain long ī; do not insert extra vowel after final ‘t’, (retodhāḥ): long āḥ; aspirate ‘dh’, (prayatiḥ): short vowels; dental ‘t’
Steady, questioning yet composed; slightly more articulated diction to preserve the riddle-structure.
