Chaupai 206.1-4

Speaker
Tulsidas (poet-narrator in the main telling)
Listener
General satsang audience (implicit); within the Manas frame this belongs to the Yajnavalkya–Bharadwaja dialogue stream
Shanta (with an emerging Dasya orientation through reverent seeking of the Lord’s feet)
Vishvamitra’s forest hermitage is harassed by Maricha and Subahu; the sage decides to approach Rama, understanding the deeper divine purpose behind the episode
Protection of dharma as public good: safeguarding yajña (ordered worship, learning, and social-spiritual ecology) against violent disruption; governance as removal of ‘earth’s burden’—systemic adharma—through righteous power aligned with compassion and restraint
The verse presents the Saguna Lord as the ‘mirror’ of jnana-vairagya—qualities often associated with Nirguna realization—thereby implying that the formless Absolute is not denied but is made accessible and ethically efficacious through the manifest Rama
Traditional Manas expositors read this passage as establishing a double causality: the immediate cause is the protection of yajña and the sages, while the deeper cause is the Lord’s cosmic mission of removing ‘mahi-bhāra’ (the accumulated weight of adharma). Vishvamitra’s resolve (‘misa’) is interpreted as a providential pretext: the sage becomes an instrument to reveal Rama’s form and virtues to the world. The line ‘gyān birāg sakal gun ayanā’ is treated as a doctrinal signature of Tulsidas’s middle way—Rama is not opposed to jñāna and vairāgya but is their luminous ground, making bhakti neither sentimental nor anti-intellectual.
Chaupai: 16/16 mātrā pattern per line (two halves), with end-rhyme and cadence suited to katha recitation
Anuprāsa (soft alliteration in repeated consonants), Arthāntaranyāsa (moving from local event to cosmic rationale), Rupaka/Pratīka (Rama as ‘mirror’ of virtues), Kārana-kārya bhāva (cause-effect linkage between yajña-protection and avatāra-purpose)
Vishishtadvaita-leaning bhakti: the Lord is personal and attribute-full, yet the source of liberating knowledge and detachment; jnana is fulfilled in devotion rather than replacing it
Bilawal (common bright, steady raga for narrative chaupai recitation in many Manas-path traditions)
