Kāṇḍa 16 ist ein konzentriertes atharvavedisches Dossier abhicārischer Praxis: das Binden, Verstummenlassen und Zurückwenden feindlicher Kräfte durch Mantra und Ritus. In neun Sūktas (in einem einzigen Anuvāka) richtet es sich gegen feindliche Rede, Verleumdung und unsichtbare Wirkkräfte, die Status, Sicherheit und Lebensunterhalt untergraben. Die Hymnen rahmen Aggression wiederholt als „Gegen‑Aggression“: Gegner werden eingeschränkt, ihre Absicht umgelenkt und die soziale Stellung sowie der Wohlstand des Auftraggebers gesichert. Der Ton ist direkt und zwingend und betont wirksamen Zwang.

Kāṇḍa 16 is predominantly abhicārika: coercive charms that bind and restrain enemies, neutralize hostile speech, and repel or reverse harmful agencies.
In Atharvavedic thought, hostile speech—curse, slander, accusation—can function as an effective attack. The hymns therefore aim to silence, bind, or turn back such vāc to protect reputation, safety, and standing.
Although its methods are coercive, the stated goals are often protective and social: preventing harm, securing authority, and ensuring prosperity by restraining adversaries and their unseen supports.
