Sukta 10

Rishi: Atharvanic tradition (sūkta attributed within AV ritual corpus; specific ṛṣi assignment requires pada-anukramaṇī consultation).

Devata: Yajña (Sacrifice personified) / Vaśā as ritually empowered object

Chandas: Anuṣṭubh (predominant; to be confirmed by syllable count in critical edition)

Inside Sukta 10

How it unfolds

  1. How it opens

Begins by framing Yajña as a knowable cosmic order—regions, directions, and sacrificial anatomy—so that knowledge itself becomes the credential for rightful taking.

  2. What it asks

May the knower of Yajña’s ‘head’ and cosmic regions legitimately take/receive Vaśā and obtain her Soma-like milk as prosperity and sustenance.

  3. Where its power lies

Divine precedent is cited: invoked with Ādityas, Indra compels the Soma-drinking in myriad vessels; gods (Sādhyas, Vasus) attend Vaśā’s milk in a radiant station, proving its superhuman potency.

  4. How it closes

Ends by sealing Vaśā’s milk as stable nourishment and confirming the claimant’s sanctioned enjoyment under the guardianship of cosmic-ritual order.

Kind of hymn

Paustika (Prosperity) / Social-ritual legitimation

What it is for

To secure recognized entitlement to the Vaśā-cow and to draw prosperity, nourishment, and divine backing from her milk by aligning the act with Yajña’s cosmic order.

Who it is for

Ritual claimants and officiants (Atharvanic practitioners, householders engaged in sacrificial exchange, and those seeking sanctioned acquisition of a ritually significant cow).

Also used as

  • Social-ritual legitimation
  • Dāna/fee authorization (dakṣiṇā-like entitlement)
  • Śāntika (dispute-quieting through ritual authority)

The deity

Yajña is treated as an ordered, knowable cosmic-ritual organism whose ‘head’ and directions confer authority; Vaśā is the tangible ritual prize whose milk embodies Soma-like nourishment and divine favor.

Powers of the deity

  • Confers ritual legitimacy and rightful claim (adhikāra) through knowledge of sacrificial structure
  • Transforms material wealth (cow, milk) into sanctified prosperity
  • Links the claimant to cosmic regions/directions, stabilizing social standing
  • Compels abundance and ‘filling’ through Indra/Soma precedent (many vessels, overflowing supply)
  • Elevates milk (payaḥ) as divine sustenance attended by Sādhyas and Vasus

Why the deity is called

Invoked to authorize taking/receiving the Vaśā-cow, to sacralize her milk as prosperity, and to ensure that acquisition and enjoyment occur without dispute, defect, or ritual fault.

The seer

  • Atharvanic ritual tradition (collective/ritual-corpus attribution; specific ṛṣi to be verified via pada-anukramaṇī)Atharvan. Paustika and social-ritual legitimation charms: securing lawful possession, prosperity through sacrificial knowledge, and empowering ritual substances (especially bovine/milk symbolism)

Other hymns of this seer

  • AV 10.9 (adjacent ritual-theological material; attribution varies by anukramaṇī)
  • AV 10.8 (cosmic/ritual speculation cluster; attribution varies)
  • AV 11.1 (selected Atharvanic ritual-corpus hymns; confirm in anukramaṇī)

Preparing for the rite

  • Select or identify the Vaśā-cow intended for ritual transfer/claim; ensure she is ritually acceptable (healthy, unblemished as per local custom).
  • Establish a clean recitation space near the cow or the place of transfer; prepare water for sipping/sprinkling and vessels for milk if milking is involved.
  • Mentally ‘map’ the rite to cosmic order (directions/regions; ‘head of Yajña’) as the hymn’s core credential.

The rite

  • Recite the sukta in full at the moment of claim/receiving, emphasizing verses that define knowledge of regions and the ‘head of Yajña.’
  • Touch the cow (or her halter) during key lines of authorization; optionally circumambulate once to mark lawful possession.
  • If milk is to be used, milk into a clean vessel after recitation; offer a small portion as a sanctifying act (domestic offering/customary oblation), then consume/distribute as prosperity-food.
  • Conclude with a verbal assertion of rightful, non-injurious taking and continued increase (kṣema/puṣṭi).

What it needs

  • Vaśā-cow (primary ritual object)
  • Milk (payaḥ) and one or more vessels (pātra)
  • Water for purification/sipping/sprinkling
  • Optional: cord/halter as a tangible ‘claim’ marker

When

At the formal moment of receiving/claiming the Vaśā (transfer, fee, prize) and/or immediately before milking for prosperity; preferably in a ritually calm, dispute-free setting.

The main substance

Vaśā-cow and her milk (payaḥ), treated as Soma-like prosperity-substance

Amulets

  • Halter/cord used as a possession-marker (optional, as a ritual token rather than a medicinal amulet)

How it is prepared

Keep vessels clean; recite during/just before the act of receiving or milking; collect milk in a dedicated vessel and, if customary, set aside a small sanctifying portion before use/consumption.

Frequently Asked Questions

Vaśā is a ritually empowered cow treated as a sanctioned source of prosperity; her milk is elevated to Soma-like nourishment supported by divine precedent.

Because the hymn makes ritual knowledge itself the authorization: one who knows Yajña’s cosmic structure is entitled to take/receive Vaśā without blame or dispute.

Primarily wealth and stability (paustika): it aims to secure lawful acquisition, social legitimacy, and sustained nourishment through the sacral power of Vaśā’s milk.
