Sukta 10.138

Devata

Indra

Mantra 1

Mantra 2

Mantra 3

Mantra 4

Mantra 5

Mantra 6

Inside Sukta 138

How it unfolds

  1. Where it opens

Indra’s companionship with the truth-seeking powers: the forces aligned to ṛta break open Vala and begin liberation.

  2. Development

Mythic victories unfold—Dawn is given her due, waters are released, Kutsa is aided, and serpent-like constraints are compelled to yield; the hymn links praise (stotra) with triumph.

  3. Climax

Indra’s irresistible casting-apart of the unassailable and shattering of godless hoards, likened to the Sun’s decisive turning that reveals and installs treasure.

  4. Where it settles

The hymn closes by naming Indra’s ‘renowned deeds’ in a cosmic key: he makes the non-sacrificer fit for sacrifice and sets the ordinance of months/time in heaven.

The deity: Indra

  • In the VedaIndra is the foremost heroic deity of the Ṛgveda: wielder of irresistible force, breaker of forts/caves, slayer of the serpent/obstructor, and winner of cattle, light, and waters for the people and the seers.
  • Cosmic functionHe restores ṛta by breaking obstruction, releasing the life-giving waters and dawn-light, and by establishing measurable order in the heavens (time’s divisions such as months).
  • Inner significanceIndra symbolizes the awakened will and luminous power that breaks inner constriction (fear, inertia, falsehood), releases insight and vitality, and aligns life with a higher order and rhythm.

Frequently Asked Questions

The hymn recalls Indra breaking the enclosure (Vala), releasing the waters and honoring Dawn, and helping the hero Kutsa against serpent-like obstructing forces.

Near the end it credits Indra with setting the ordinance of the months in heaven, portraying him not only as a warrior but also as a power that establishes cosmic order and rhythm.

It is commonly suited for Indra-invocation in fire/Soma contexts to seek victory, removal of obstacles, and renewed clarity—symbolically, a prayer for inner and outer ‘breakthrough.’
