Inside Sukta 40

How it unfolds

  1. Where it opens

A direct, intimate summons: Indra is asked to drink the Soma prepared for him and to unyoke his steeds and join the companions at the rite.

  2. Development

The hymn ties Indra’s arrival to the ritual conditions—Agni blazing and Soma pressed—while stressing single-minded devotion in the caller’s heart and speech.

  3. Climax

The plea for suvitā and great benefit (mahe naḥ): Indra’s coming is framed as the decisive turning toward victorious progress and empowered life.

  4. Where it settles

A final all-encompassing request: wherever Indra may dwell, may he protect the sacrifice and the worshippers in harmony with the Maruts.

The deity: Indra

  • In the VedaIndra is praised as soma-drinker, wielder of thunder (vajrin), lord of might who comes swiftly on his bay steeds, and protector of the sacrificer; he is also ‘girvaṇas’, the one who delights in hymns.
  • Cosmic functionHe secures order by breaking obstacles, releasing vital powers, and granting victory, strength, and safe passage; he responds to Soma and hymn as the energizing center of the rite.
  • Inner significanceIndra symbolizes awakened will-power and victorious clarity—an inner force that, when ‘invited’ by disciplined offering and truthful speech, overcomes inertia and fear and grants confident forward movement (suvitā).

The seer

  • Bharadvāja BārhaspatyaBharadvāja gotra (Āṅgirasa/Bārhaspatya line) · A प्रमुख ṛṣi of the Rigveda’s sixth maṇḍala, famed for powerful Indra and Agni hymns and for articulating the ritual-psychological link between Soma, inspired speech, and victory.

  • Later Vedic tradition associates Bharadvāja with Br̥haspati/Āṅgirasa heritage and with transmission of sacred lore (śruti) within the Bharadvāja lineage

The rite, step by step

Offerings

  • Soma (pressed juice)
  • Ghee/oblations into Agni as accompaniment
  • Hymns (stotra/śastra) as the ‘offering of speech’

Frequently Asked Questions

It invites Indra to come to the Soma sacrifice, drink the pressed Soma, and then grant strength, successful progress (suvitā), and protection to the worshippers.

Because the hymn assumes a Soma-yajña setting: Agni is kindled to carry offerings, and Soma is pressed as Indra’s special drink that energizes his help.

The Maruts are storm-like powers allied to Indra; invoking them together asks for coordinated force—both protection of the ritual and victory over obstacles.
