Sukta 2
divás-pṛṣṭhé dhā́vamānaṃ supárṇam áditiyāḥ putráṃ nā́thakā́ma úpa yāmi bhītáḥ | sá naḥ sū́rya prá tirā dīrghám ā́yur mā́ riṣāma sumatáu te syāma
On heaven’s back I seek, in fear, the swift-flying fair-wing, Aditi’s son, desiring a guardian. Do thou, O Sun, bear forth for us long life; let us not suffer harm: may we be in thy gracious favour.
Rishi: Traditionally connected with Sūrya/Āditya praise in AV 13.2 (Anukramaṇī attribution varies; often Atharvanic seers)
Devata: Sūrya (Āditya), also ‘Suparṇa’ as solar bird
Chandas: Predominantly Triṣṭubh-like cadence (mixed; AV 13 often shows non-uniform metrical behavior)
Primary: karuna
Secondary: shanta
