Inside Sukta 83

How it unfolds

  1. Where it opens

The poet calls the community to speak inspired praise and invite Parjanya with reverence, presenting him as the mighty, roaring bull.

  2. Development

Parjanya’s storm-action is unfolded: thunder, cloud-release, and the descent of waters that carry the generative ‘seed’ into plants; the Maruts appear as active assistants in preparing the rain.

  3. Climax

The decisive moment is the pouring-down of waters—thunder arriving, streams set flowing, and the earth made fertile so herbs arise for nourishment.

  4. Where it settles

The hymn closes by acknowledging the rain’s accomplishment—drought crossed beyond, herbs generated for food—and by extending the boon to future generations through inspired well-being.

  • Inner significanceSymbol of the descending grace that ‘fertilizes’ the inner field—reviving dullness, restoring vitality, and enabling growth of insight and nourishment in life.

The seer

  • Atri (Ātreya)Ātreya (Atri-gotra) · One of the great Vedic seers, renowned for hymns of luminous insight and for prayers that secure protection, vitality, and divine favor for the community.
