Agni Vaiśvānara (with solar association)
Triṣṭubh
This short Triṣṭubh hymn praises Agni as Vaiśvānara—the universal fire—enthroned as royal splendor over all worlds and working in concert with the Sun. It depicts him as upheld in heaven and earth, entering the herbs (healing powers), and asks for day-and-night protection, truth, and abiding prosperity. The closing verse widens the blessing through allied cosmic supporters—Mitra–Varuṇa, Aditi, Sindhu, Earth, and Heaven—so that wealth and fullness “cleave” to the worshipper.
Mantra 1
May we be in the good guidance of Vaiśvānara, for he is the kingly glory set over the worlds. Born from here within us, he looks out upon all this, and Vaiśvānara labors in union with the Sun to manifest the truth of the worlds.
Mantra 2
Upheld in the heaven, upheld on the earth, Agni enters into all the powers of growth and healing. This Vaiśvānara Agni, upheld by his own force, may he guard us from all wounding by day, and may he guard us by night.
Mantra 3
O Vaiśvānara, let that be thy truth: may the plenitudes of being, the generous riches, cleave to us. And may Mitra and Varuṇa enlarge us in it—Aditi, the River of the flow, Earth and Heaven also.
Vaiśvānara is Agni understood as the universal fire—present in all beings and all worlds—acting as a royal power and working together with the Sun.
It points to fire as the life-force behind growth and healing in nature: Agni supports vitality in plants and thus becomes a protector and restorer of health.
The hymn asks for guidance in truth, protection from harm both day and night, and for prosperity and fullness of being to remain with the worshipper.
