Rig Veda 1.2 is an early Soma-offering hymn that first invites Vāyu, the swift Life-Breath, to come to the sacrifice and drink the prepared Soma. It then widens the invocation to paired deities—Vāyu with Indra, and finally Mitra-Varuṇa—seeking inspired power, victorious energy, and the discerning right-order (dakṣa) needed for effective sacred action.

Mantras

Mantra 1

O Vāyu, come—O luminous and beautiful One. These Soma-essences are made ready and rightly prepared. Drink of them, and hear our call: receive the inner summons that aspires toward the Breath of the Truth.

Mantra 2

O Vāyu, by the uplifted hymns the seekers grow fervent towards you; the chanters, having pressed the Soma, who are knowers of the luminous Day, call you near—towards the awakened breath and its swift inspirations.

Mantra 3

O Vāyu, thy wide-spreading stream of delight-milk comes to the giver (the aspiring sacrificer); luminous and far-ranging, it moves for the drinking of Soma—so that the inner rapture may be received and increased in us.

Mantra 4

O Indra and Vāyu, come near to these Soma-pressings, borne by their powers of delight; for the Soma-drops indeed yearn for you—seeking your presence to awaken the inner force and the free breath in us.

Mantra 5

O Vāyu and Indra, you two take cognizance of the pressed Soma; O lords of plenitude and victorious force, come—hasten near to the swift-flowing delight that runs toward you.

Mantra 6

O Vāyu and Indra, come swiftly toward the one who is pressing Soma; draw near to the offering set out—O you two heroic powers—thus, by the awakened thought that aspires for the Truth.

Mantra 7

I call Mitra of the clarified and stainless power of right action, and Varuṇa the destroyer of harm; may they accomplish in us the thought-movement that flows with the luminous ghee—clear, straight, and effective for the soul’s work.

Mantra 8

By the power of the Ṛta (the Truth-Order), Mitra and Varuṇa—growers of the Ṛta, touchers of the Ṛta—grant us the vast and luminous will of right action (kratu), so that our inner being moves in harmony with the Truth-Consciousness.

Mantra 9

May Mitra and Varuṇa—those two seers, widely-born and of vast, sheltering habitation—place within us dakṣa, the discerning power of right formation, for the fulfilment of the work (apas), the effective action of the soul.

Frequently Asked Questions

It is an invitatory Soma hymn: it calls Vāyu to come quickly, drink the prepared Soma, and attend to the worshipper’s prayer, ensuring the rite becomes effective.

In many Soma-pressing traditions Vāyu is treated as the first Soma-drinker; as breath and swift motion, he represents the immediate energizing of the sacrifice.

The closing prayer asks Mitra-Varuṇa to place dakṣa (right discernment and skilled ordering) in the worshipper so the ritual ‘work’ (apas) is properly formed and fulfilled.
